Carmela Knight lived in the tranquil suburban of Pickering, Ontario with her family which included her husband David Knight and two children.

As per Dateline, Carmela was a dedicated and loving mother who would often be seen driving her two sons to hockey practice. She was also described as a lively person with a warmhearted presence by her friends and neighbors.

However, everything changed for the family after their home was caught in a fire on September 15, 2014. Around 7:50 pm, Carmela’s bestfriend and neighbor, Ana Conaly, saw the fire and tried to call Carmela but couldn’t get through to her. She later informed Carmela’s mother and sister, who immediatelly arrived at the scene.

As the firefighters put off the fire, they found a charred body in the garage of the house, which was later revealed to be Carmela’s body with a needle stuck in her arm.

She was the only one at home as her husband and kids had gone for the kids' hockey practice.

Initially, the whole scene looked like an accident, but after Carmela’s autopsy report came in, it shocked everyone as the reason behind Carmela’s death was said to be due to a blunt force trauma and not fire.

Detective Diane Jennings, who was leading the case, explained that:

"She had facial injuries and she died of a neck compression."

As the investigation started, details about the Knight family came to the fore. The detectives were informed about David and Carmela’s impending divorce due to David’s infidelity. He was having an affair and wanted to permanently shift to Florida, but didn’t have any money.

As per Dateline, David was to receive $800,000 as life insurance claims on account of Carmela’s death, making him a prime suspect despite having a strong alibi.

Since the police were not able to find any evidence linking David to Carmela’s death, they planned a sting operation called ‘Mr. Big’. The undercover agents befriended Graham McDonald, a contractor who had worked on Carmela and David’s house and was an acquaintance of David's brother Matt.

In the guise of a fishing trip, the undercover agents were able to make Graham confess to his crimes. He gave a detailed account of how, on David’s instructions, he killed his wife.

Later, on the police’s instructions, McDonald met David after asking to be paid for the murder he had committed for him, and they were both arrested.

In a highly publicized courtroom drama, David and Graham were convicted of first-degree murder. They both received life sentences in prison and will be able to apply for parole after 25 years.

The Dateline episode is reported by Andrea Canning and includes interviews from Carmela's friends and family, including her son, and also detectives involved in the case.
