The twelfth episode of the ninth season of Dateline covers the shocking murder of an American hero. Sgt. Vincent Goslyn was a soldier in Fort Campbell and served there as a quartermaster and equipment repairer. Goslyn Jr. was shot more than once on February 3, 2012, on Fidelio Road, off of Fort Campbell Boulevard. The perpetrators of this crime are Vincent's wife, Jessie, and her lover, Jarred Tabor Long.
On March 7, 2020, Dateline aired an episode on this case. Titled "Evil Was Waiting," the episode went into detail about this harrowing case in which 5 kids were left without a father. The official synopsis for this episode reads:
"Vince Goslyn found his calling in the military. His career was thriving and he had built a beautiful family. Then one night, the father of five was gunned down. Did his decision to help someone in need cost him his life or was he targeted?"
Explaining Dateline's Vincent Goslyn case
On February 3, 2012, Vincent and his wife, Jessie L. Goslyn, were returning home after a dining out. They were driving on Fidelio Road when Jessie was supposedly feeling a bit ill, and they saw a stranded man. Vince left the car to see if the stranded man needed any assistance. However, he was shot nine times, and Jessie said that Vince supposedly instructed her to drive to safety.
Jessie called 911 to inform the police that her husband Vince was shot by a man he was trying to help. However, police discovered that what looked like a random shootout might not have been an unplanned crime at all. Turns out it might've been a pre-meditated plan for murder all along.
Harrowing facts about this Dateline murder case
Here are some of the harrowing facts about the Vincent Goslyn murder case that was featured in a 2020 Dateline episode:
- Vincent served tours in Afghanistan
Vincent, an equipment repairer and quartermaster at Fort Campbell, had completed two tours in Afghanistan. Despite surviving difficult conditions, Vincent was brutally murdered in his homeland by, thanks to the machinations of someone he knew.
- His wife cheated on him
One of the shocking revelations of this case that was featured on Dateline was that Jessie was having an affair with a man named Jarred Tabor Long. Even worse, Jarred supposedly stayed home with Jessie every time Vincent was not home. Some even believe that Jessie was the one who came up with the plan, while Jarred just pulled the trigger.
- Jessie alleged domestic violence
Jessie alleged that she was a victim of domestic violence, and she wanted the judge to take this into account. However, Judge Andrew Self said that the domestic violence angle was new to this case. Then, Self permitted Vincent's cousin to read this statement:
“Junior (Vincent Roslyn) was a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a nephew, a cousin and a soldier,” part of the statement said. “He may not have been perfect, but he worked tirelessly to provide for his family.”
The cousin also went on to mention that Vincent was shot multiple times, describing the act as "overkill."
- The prosecutor was fired
The prosecutor for this case - Lynn Pryor, and her staff were removed from this case in July 2017. She and her staff Judge Self because Pryor was in a relationship with Captain Ed Stokes, a detective in the Vincent Goslyn murder case. A part of Judge Andrew Self said in a two-page order if Pryor was still participating in this case, it would:
"Undermine confidence in the integrity of the judicial system and potentially the integrity of the verdict in this case."
While Pryor expressed disappointment, she accepted the ruling. She issued this public statement:
"I’ve been involved in the prosecution of Jarred Long and Jessie Goslyn since the day Vincent Goslyn was brutally murdered," she said. "While I feel like the attention has been recently diverted away from what actually happened during that tragic course of events to something that was irrelevant to the investigation, the ultimate goal is to ensure that justice is served. For that reason, I will not appeal the judge’s ruling and will allow another prosecutor to seek a fair and just resolution on behalf of Vincent Goslyn’s family.”
- Jessie and Jarred were sentenced in 2018
Jessie pleaded guilty to complicity to murder in April 2018, while Jarred did the same for first-degree murder in February. Thus, Andrew Self sentenced Jessie to 22.5 years and Jarred to 30 years.
After that, this people were reminded of this horrific crime due to Dateline.
