1) Craig Rideout's family took his life
Following the conclusion of the police investigation, Judge Thomas Moran convicted Craig's wife, Laura Rideout, and their oldest son, Colin Rideout, of second-degree murder. Another son by the name of Alex Rideout was also convicted on two counts of evidence tampering.
It was revealed in the course of the investigation that Laura and Craig were locked in a bitter struggle over the custody of their children following their divorce proceedings. While Laura wanted their children to relocate with him and her boyfriend Paul Tucci to North Carolina, Craig was adamant about not agreeing to hand over custody. This was seen as one of the primary motives behind the murder.
2) A trail of blood
The blood-stained clothes that were worn by Colin and Alex and were recovered from the trunk of their car proved to be one of the clinching evidence in the case. While Colin and Laura's clothes were significantly drenched with blood that matched Craig's, the blood found on Alex's garments was significantly less. The jurors deliberated about this set of physical evidence for a long time before pronouncing their verdict.
3) The conflict between father and son
While Craig and Laura were fighting it out against each other for the custody of their children, Craig's oldest son, Colin, sided with his mother and desperately wanted his father to agree to relinquish the custody of his younger siblings. A set of emails discovered as evidence proved the case to this effect. While Craig wrote:
"I enjoy talking with you and am generally proud of you as my son, I would like to think that you and I can have a relationship without all the b***s*** and drama associated with your mother.”
Colin was furious with his father and retorted:
"This is ridiculous. I am tired of your duplicity, your constant lying, and your disgusting attempts to keep my mother and siblings under your thumb."
4) Surveillance evidence
A new piece of surveillance evidence that wasn't covered on the Dateline episode related to the surveillance pings received from Craig's cell phone, which led the prosecutors to establish the timeline of his murder. The pings proved that Craig and his phone left his house about 3:15 AM on July 20, 2016, and moved fifty miles to the Yates County roadside where his body was found later.
5) Untold details surface
Prior to his death, Craig called 911 and reported a break-in at his house. Although this might have been connected to his subsequent murder, he downplayed it while speaking to the emergency service, stating that he was reporting the incident only because his Blackberry was stolen.
