The Dateline episode titled Deliberate Evil chronicled the disturbing case of Ali Irsan and his spate of honor killings. The Dateline episode in question shed light on the 2012 Gelareh Bagherzadeh case that went cold for almost a year before Irsan struck once again. This time, as explained on Dateline, Irsan's victim was Coty Beavers. In both cases, the motive behind the murder was revealed to be Irsan's will to dominate the lives of his daughters against their will. Here's five harrowing details from the case as revealed on the Dateline episode.
5 harrowing details from Dateline: Deliberate Evil?
1) Ali Irsan was a fraudster
As revealed by the police investigation, Ali Irsan was a long-time fraudster and con-man. Nesreen Irsan-Beavers, Irsan's daughter, claimed that her father was responsible for making his living by duping several government agencies.
This was eventually brought to the attention of Social Securty Adiministration special agent Gary Dickens who discovered that Irsan was guilty of stealing and assuming identities, falsely claiming lost baggage from airlines and even unlawfully utilizing food stamps and disability cheques. A search of Irsan's home even yielded more than two hundred credit cards. Irsan and his wife were then arrested on fraud charges.
2) Ali Irsan stalked Bagherzadeh
The investigation also revealed that Irsan, along with his wife and his son, had been stalking Bagherzadeh to keep a track of her whereabouts before her murder. GPS devices found from inside Irsan's home revealed the routes taken by them to trail Bagherzadeh's car and investigators found a handwritten note stating Bagherzadeh's license plate number inside the car used by Irsan and his family.
3) Irsan was a terribly controlling father
Irsan was the head of a huge family and had many sons and daughters from his two marriages. While raising his children, he did his best to dominate and control their lives on the pretext of instilling Sunni Muslim traditions. He once showed up at his daughter Nesreen's college to bring her back and had her under house arrest. He even threatened to kill her if she ever had a boyfriend, as revealed by herself:
"My dad always threatened that if he ever found out that I had a boyfriend, he’d put a bullet between my eyes and between my boyfriend’s eyes."
4) Irsan's second wife gave her testimony against him
During the course of the trial against Irsan, prosecutors were able to turn his second wife Shmou Alrawabdeh into a cooperating witness. She testified that she accompanied her husband and his son for both the murders. The trio staked out Coty Beavers before the son sneaked into the house and shot the former dead.
5) Irsan also murdered Amjad Alidam
Long before Irsan murdered Coty Beavers and Gelareh Bagherzadeh, Amjad Alidam became his first victim. Back in 1999, Alidam had married Irsan's daughter without his knowledge while he was out of the country. Upon returning, Irsan shot Alidam dead and claimed to have done so in self-defense.
