Dateline: 5 details about Archie McFarland's death
1) Who was Dateline victim Archie McFarland?
Archie was a 58-year-old man living in Long Beach, California, with his wife Mary Ann. The couple were having some problems in their marriage.
On Dec. 9, 1985, Archie was found murdered in his driveway and his body was discovered by his son, Gary McFarland, who initially thought that his father died because of a heart attack. But when he turned his body, he found him covered in blood. Police later revealed that he was stabbed four times in the chest and one time in the groin.
2) Dateline victim Archie's wife was having an affair with another man
On Archie's death, the police found out that his wife was having an affair with another man, Janos Kulcsar. While she was having problems in her marriage, she met Janos at Alpine Village in the 1980s.
The two started an affair, and Mary left Archie to live with Janos. But after a few years, she returned to her husband to work out their problems and left Jonas for good.
3) Jonas Kulcsar was the primary suspect in Archie's murder
After Mary decided to return to her husband, Jonas did not leave her and kept pursuing her to return to him.
He threatened Archie multiple times on the phone and said that he would 'get even' with him. He also once visited their home and confessed his affair with Mary to Archie:
“You know I’ve been seeing your wife.”
While he was the primary suspect in Archie's murder, the police could not arrest him because of insufficient evidence. After her husband's death, Mary returned to live with Janos.
4) Jonas Kulcsar was finally sentenced for the murder of Dateline victim Archie in 2009
In 2009, Archie finally got justice when Jonas was arrested for Archie's first-degree murder in June 2009.
Deputy District Attorney John Lewin convicted him of this murder:
“This is a man who has earned the sentence he is going to get. He deserves some suffering and some pain.”
Further, Torrance Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold sentenced him 26 years in prison, and considering Janos was 60 when he was convicted, he will likely spend the rest of his life in jail:
“I will sleep very well after the sentence is going to be imposed on you, Mr. Kulcsar. I am very confident you did what you are accused of doing.”
5) What did Archie's children say after Janos's sentencing?
On Dateline, Archie's son Gary thanked the system for the justice served to his father:
“Sometimes our faith in the system can be waning. I really appreciate the fact that the system does work.”
His sister, Linda, spoke about how she does not hold a grudge against the Kulcsar family for what Jonas did:
“Things happen we don’t understand. My hope is we would focus on reconciliation of the family and focus on forgiveness. Justice has been done.”
