Dateline Season 22, Episode 3, titled Deadly Intent, followed the case of Connie Hoagland and how her husband had attempted to murder her in 2010. The official synopsis of the episode reads,

“Connie and Larry Hoagland built a life centered on faith and family. Then, a vicious attack threatened it all. Someone wanted Connie dead. But who? After a bomb exploded underneath her car, secrets started to emerge.”

After Larry was convicted of attempted murder and other charges, almost two years after he tried to kill Connie, she spoke to ABC 20/20 and revealed her side of the story. Her case was then revisited on Dateline. Since there are no recent updates on her whereabouts, those two documentations remain the main sources of information about her.

Connie and Larry had married young. Both of them were in their 20s when they started a family together. They seemed like a happy couple with three children, and at the beginning of the investigation, San Diego Sheriff Det. Robert Luke also got the same idea. He told ABC News,

“They struck me as a very nice family. They stuck together, they were very proud of each other, they were very supportive of each other.”

However, the way an attempt was made on Connie’s life, made the law enforcement authorities wonder who could possibly want to harm them, and would go to the extent of using a bomb for the same purpose. As Connie’s truck exploded right after she turned on the ignition, police eventually realized that a pipe bomb was to blame.

Who had put the bomb there or with what intent remained unclear for a while. Remembering the pain she went through right after the explosion, Connie said,

“I just remember my feet were in such pain ... [like] they were just blown off.”

Given the scale of the explosion, the law enforcement officials were also confused, as Luke said,

“Not knowing who she was or anything about the Hoaglands whatsoever ... [they asked]: Was there gambling debt? Was there some type of drug deals going wrong? We look at every angle there was.”

As the investigation proceeded, it came to light that the Hoaglands were dealing with a lot of debts and Larry was also having an affair with another woman. These two new pieces of information and a call from Larry’s business partner, helped the police to solve the case.

Larry’s business partner gave the police a call after he found some disturbing browsing history on their shared work laptop. He found out that Larry had browsed through various websites, all with instructions on how to make bombs. Eventually, the police arrested Larry within a few days of the explosion. Connie was still in the hospital, recovering from that fatal attack.

It also came to light that the work trips that Larry apparently took to help his financially struggling family were not all work, after all, as he went to meet his mistress during those trips. He was having an affair with Lee Ann Rupert, with whom he was close in high school.

This news came as a shock to Connie as she said,

“I didn't even think that he would have been a suspect.”

Larry was convicted of attempted murder and various additional charges and was given a life sentence in jail with another additional 13 years of prison time.

Dateline can be streamed Peacock.
