Details of Dateline: Deadly Entanglement. The latest true-crime episode

Dateline: Deadly Entanglement will re-investigate the murder of Desiree Sunford, who was brutally shot nine times at her home in 2013.

Her husband, Scott Sunford, a trainer with the local military, was the first suspect because of his professional history and difficult marriage with Desiree. While the couple happily tied the knot a decade ago, their relationship started having problems, which even led to Scott having an affair with another woman, Paige Blades.

While the police suspected that Scott and Paige had conspired together to kill Desiree because Scott had gotten his new girlfriend pregnant, the killer was someone else.

The killer was later identified as Marty Grismer, one of Paige's colleagues at Basic American Foods, who had feelings for her.

In the latest Dateline episode, Alexander interviews Paige and confronts her for her involvement in Desiree's murder, to which she replies:

"I don’t think that’s fair. I believe that if Marty hadn’t been in my life, Des would still be alive. I understand that to a lot of people, it probably seems like and feels like I am central to everything. But from my own side, I’m on the outside looking in. I didn’t feel like I was the one in the center."

Dateline: Deadly Entanglement- How was Desiree's killer caught?

With no new leads and a murder weapon in sight, the case went cold for over a year. The police were also not able to link Scott and Paige to Desiree's murder. In addition, Scott broke up with Paige and took over a new woman.

A year later, Marty Grismer finally confessed to Paige about Desiree's murder, asking her to kill Scott's new woman as he did with Desiree. While Paige was shocked to learn the truth, she could not provide befitting evidence for the police to arrest Marty.

Finally, when Marty's employers found parts of a gun that matched Desiree's gunshot wounds in his office cabinet, he was arrested for the murder. He confessed that he killed Desiree, hoping that her husband Scott would be framed for the murder and he would be able to begin a relationship with Paige.

As told on Dateline, Marty took the Alford plea and was sentenced to 15 years in prison in January 2018. He is currently being held at the Minimum Security Unit (MSU) at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, Washington.
