Dateline: Deadly Desire investigated the brutal murder of Emmett Corrigan, a father of five, who was engaged in a love affair with his employee.
The official synopsis of the episode reads as follows:
Kandi Hall, 40, an Idaho paralegal, has an torrid affair with her married boss, Emmett Corrigan, 30. Neither her husband, Robert, 42, nor the pregnant Mrs. Corrigan are too thrilled about this betrayal. So displeased, that the entire festering triangle concludes in a fatal confrontation, in, of all places, a Walgreen's parking lot.
In March 2011, Emmett was shot twice by his lover's husband in the Walgreens parking lot. He later confessed that the crime was self-defense.
More on Dateline's episode in our story.
What was the love triangle between Dateline victim Emmett, Kandi, and Rob?
As told by Kandi on Dateline, disappointed and low on self-esteem because of her husband's infidelity, she got attracted to her new boss, Emmett:
“I would like to be put on that pedestal. Emmett made me feel that way. It was pretty much an ego boost to me. “I was thinking about me and only me. You know what, it made me feel good, it made me feel like I was on top of the world,”
Elsewhere, Emmett's wife Ashley, unaware of her husband's infidelity, was wondering why their marriage was crumbling.
On the night of March 11, 2011, in between a heated argument with his wife, Emmett left for Walgreens. On the same night, Kandi also left her house to go to Walgreens, making it clear that the lovers were meeting up. Kandi left her car and approached Emmett's truck.
Her teenage daughter spotted her car at Walgreens and called her father. According to Walgreens surveillance footage, Rob is seen approaching Emmett's truck.
As told by Kandi on Dateline, both the men started fighting over her, and she was trying to make both of them stop when three gunshots were fired. While Rob's head was bleeding, Emmett was lying on the ground of the parking lot.
Kandi saw two bullets, one in his head and another in his heart, and immediately called 911.
Rob was convicted of Dateline victim Emmett's murder
Rob was immediately arrested for Dateline victim Emmett's murder, but he pleaded not guilty in court and revealed that it was a murder of self-defense. When Emmett fired a bullet at his head, he got control of the gun and shot him to death in self-defense.
But prosecutor Jason Spillman noted that Rob went to Walgreens with a loaded gun, which confirms that he went there to murder Emmett:
“I think that Robert Hall went to the Walgreens in order to confront Emmett Corrigan, that he took a loaded gun, and Rob decided that was his opportunity to get his Kandi back by killing Emmett,”
Since all the evidence was pointing in his direction, Rob was convicted of Emmett's second-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He will be eligible for parole in 2028.
After Rob's conviction, Kandi was also sentenced to 18 months in prison for embezzlement fraud of about $30,000 from her previous employer.
On Dateline, she expressed remorse for her actions:
“I have a lot of guilt still in me, a lot, and it has to do with my kids and his kids and it makes me sick how I could do something like that. I’m the responsible one and it’s something that, I don’t know, are they ever going to be able to get through that? I mean, hopefully I can prove to them one day that it was just a mistake.”
