Dateline’s June 13, 2010, episode, titled Against All Odds, followed the case of the tragic shooting of Erica Hughes, who was shot five times along with her mother in their Louisville, Kentucky, residence.
The shooting happened in May 2006, and while Erica’s mother was found dead at the scene, the little girl fought for her life and miraculously survived. In Dateline: Against All Odds, Rick Arnold, the lead investigator of the LMPD who handled the case, mentioned that on the day of the shooting:
“We were headed to Wilson Avenue, 17th and Wilson Avenue as the caravan of cars taking Erica to the hospital to save her life was going the other direction.”
Let us now explore in detail what happened to Erica Hughes and how she survived that attack, as shown in Dateline.
What happened to Erica Hughes?

Erica Hughes was the daughter of Earon Michelle Harper. She was just a child when this tragic shooting occurred on May 18, 2006. Her mother, who was 41 years old, was shot twice and died at the scene. However, Erica clung to life when they were discovered by their landlord.
The landlord had entered the house after noticing that the front door was open. He called out multiple times, but when no one responded, he decided to go in—only to stumble upon a horrific scene.
He immediately called the police. Initially, Detective Thomas Berth from the Louisville Metro Police Department thought Erica was also dead, as she had been shot in the head. However, upon closer inspection, he noticed that the child was still breathing. They called for an ambulance, but as it was taking too long to arrive, a sergeant at the scene decided to break protocol and transport the bleeding child to the hospital themselves.
As shown in Dateline, Officer Larry Riley and Thomas held the child’s legs and head, respectively, realizing they needed to act quickly to save her life. They rushed Erica to Kosair Children’s Hospital.
Steve, who was responsible for driving, recalled:
“The sergeant said, ‘Drive as fast as you can, and they’re blocking the streets. And he said he’s willing to deal with what comes after that.”
Fortunately, all their efforts were not in vain, and miraculously, Erica survived. Her resilience has since become legendary, and her journey has been nothing short of inspirational, as mentioned by those who appeared on Dateline.
Erica has put this tragedy behind her
As the Dateline episode revealed, after surviving that horrific attack, Erica gradually moved toward a better life. Her doctors stated that she was lucky to have been shot at an angle that was not fatal. After three and a half surgeries, she made it out of the ICU and was eventually discharged.
Given her brave and miraculous story, Erica became a symbol of resilience against the rampant gun violence in Louisville. She also expressed that there was no point in holding grudges against the criminals who did this to her—choosing instead to put the past behind her and focus on a fresh start.
Dateline can be streamed on Peacock.
