Erica Hughes, who survived five gunshot wounds on her head as a 2-year-old child, became the talk of the town after her miraculous survival. A resident of Louisville, Kentucky, Erica and her mother Earon Michelle Harper were shot at their rented home where the landlord found them.
While Earon did not make it, little Erica held on and survived. The Dateline episode, titled Against All Odds, followed her story. The official synopsis of the episode reads,
“A little girl beats the odds and inspires a city. It all started with a crime not even police could believe: the girl, just a toddler, was shot in the head deliberately... left for dead by a killer who disappeared into the night. But she stunned everyone with her courage and her will to survive, none more so than a detective, who vowed to crack this case, no matter how long it took.”
Erica survived the shooting as the bullet did not go through her brain directly and instead took a downward path, leading to her chin.
Let us now explore Erica Hughes’ survival story in detail.
Erica Hughes survived the horrific gun violence that took her mother away
41-year-old Earon and her 2-year-old daughter Erica were shot multiple times at their Kentucky home. Later, when the landlord came in and discovered the mother-daughter duo lying in that shocking condition, he had given up hope for both of them.
However, upon the arrival of the police, Erica was found to be alive. The reporting sergeants and detectives on the scene decided that given the nature of the crime and situation they were dealing with, they needed to act fast and that involved breaking rules.
Talking about that day, Dr. Steve Kelsey, who helped in saving Erica’s life, mentioned,
“It was catastrophic. It was horrific. I have not driven down Dixie and Wilson since.”
He added,
“I was going literally over 100 miles per hour. I could smell my brakes. I heard the EMT guys in the back saying, 'Stay with us. Stay with us.”
Fortunately, after they finally reached Kosair Children’s Hospital, Erica made it through after a few surgeries.
Erica Hughes has become a symbol of hope for many in Louisville
After 10 years of surviving that brutal attack, Erica (then 12 years old) said that things have gradually become easier for her and she could talk about the incident without getting triggered.
In an interview with Wave, in 2016, Erica mentioned,
“I read books and go to the library and play outside with my little sisters.”
Since her mother’s death, Erica’s grandparents have been her legal guardians, and despite losing her sight in one eye because of being shot, Erica has grown up to be like any young adult.
Moreover, she has also forgiven the people responsible for the attack and has instead, decided to make positive use of what she had been through. She helps victims of gun violence by visiting local hospitals and talking to them. She mentioned,
“I get to help people who are shot and people who are sick and stuff. I tell them if I can survive gunshots, then they can.”
Her words stand as a testament to her resilience and it is only natural that she motivates people, who have suffered because of gun violence, to find the strength to move forward.
Dateline can be streamed on Peacock.
