1) Dateline: Who was Kevin Foley's victim?

John Yelenic was a dentist in Blairsville, Pennsylvania. In his late 20s, he married a mother of two children, Michelle Kalmer, and John accepted her kids as his own. After some years, the couple also adopted a boy from Russia named J.J. The family of five was happy initially, but soon problems started arising. His friends and family recalled that the couple was headed for divorce the day after John was murdered by Kevin.

2) Dateline: Kevin was allegedly brainwashed by his girlfriend

When the state trooper Kevin Foley was linked with John's murder, it was revealed that his wife Michelle was subject to a monthly spousal payment from John. However, she would no longer receive this benefit if the divorce came through. According to a WTAE Network report, she was to receive a $1 million insurance policy on her ex-husband. Michelle regularly told Kevin how John treated him, and he had started to hate the latter. His co-workers later said that Kevin wished John to be dead:

“I wish John Yelenic was dead” or “I wish he died a horrible death. This was daily. This was after hello,” they recalled were things Kevin said.

3) Dateline: John was found stabbed to death in his house

In 2006, John's neighbors heard screams from his house. After an hour, one of the neighbor's son found John dead:

"He had red carpet so I didn’t notice the blood at first, but I noticed that his panel side window on the left was broken and there was blood kind of smeared a little bit going down the front. I put my hand through the window, I unlocked the door, went inside and I saw John laying right there.”

The police confirmed that Kevin was there to talk, but the discussion turned heated, and Kevin killed his girlfriend's ex-husband in a fit of rage.

4) Dateline: DNA found on John matched with Kevin Foley

A after his death, a cousin of John appealed to re-open the case, and Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek sent the DNA under John's fingernails, which matched with one of their own — Kevin Foley.

They found bloodsoaked footprints at the crime scene, too, which were of limited edition Asics shoes, the same shoes that Kevin Foley purchased through an online program for law enforcement officers.

After seeing all the evidence and having found a murder motive, the jury decided Kevin was guilty and charged him with first-degree murder of John Yelenic. According to NBC News, he pleaded not guilty:

"I never made a threat with the intention of carrying it out... There isn't any joke. It's just my personality, my behavior (with co-workers)."

His pleas were refuted, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole. He is currently being held at State Correctional Institution — Mahanoy in Frackville, Pennsylvania.
