AMC's Dark Winds reached a major milestone with their third season, attracting 2.2 million viewers on the night of the premiere.
The show's timeline is set in the 1970s and follows two Navajo Tribal Police officers, who take up a complex double murder case.
As revealed by AMC on March 14, 2025, citing Nielsen Live+3 ratings, this represents a strong spike of 50% as compared to Season 2. As a result, AMC+ have doubled their subscriber acquisition with Season 3.
It has been reported by AMC Networks that filming for Season 4 is scheduled to begin in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Additionally, executive producer Zahn McClarnon will be making his directorial debut in Season 4, scheduled to release in 2026.
Dan McDermott, Head of Entertainment at AMC Studios, congratulated the show on its success, stating:
“For Season 3 to attract more than 2.2 million premiere night viewers and again receive this level of critical acclaim is truly remarkable.”
Dark Winds Season 3’s record-breaking success
AMC's recent report reinforced that Dark Winds Season 3 not only surpassed its earlier counterparts, but also helped drive noteworthy growth for AMC+.
The Season 2 premiere garnered more than two million viewers, thus proving that the show's popularity is on the rise among the audience.
In addition to this, the series' recent presence on Netflix's Top 10 Chart helped boost viewership, thus solidifying its position as one of the best crime dramas on TV. The show has also garnered praise from the media, with Rolling Stone calling Season 3 this year's greatest collective episode of television.
Vulture praised Zahn McClarnon's work, by stating:
“Give Zahn McClarnon an Emmy already.”
What to expect in Dark Winds Season 4?
With Season 4 already in production, fans should expect modifications and development in storytelling, especially with Zahn McClarnon taking the directorial chair for one of the episodes.
This season will revisit mysteries behind the characters of Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) as they deal with crimes and governmental plots of the 1970s Southwest.
Creator, John Wirth, spoke about his joy in the show's renewal, stating:
“We are excited and energized by the opportunity to continue exploring and expanding the world of Dark Winds in a fourth season.”
Additionally, as has been the case with past seasons, Season 4 is expected to have a long list of guest stars.
