The third season of the thriller psychological series follows the tumultuous lives of Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Border Patrol agent Bernadette Manuelito. This season was based on the missing case of George Bowlegs and the murder of Ernesto Cata, which unraveled into a complex investigation involving corruption and even archaeological fraud. While Joe and Jim Chee crack a major piece of evidence linked to Ernesto Cata's murder, Bernadette Manuelito finds herself in a dangerous situation after trusting the wrong person.

Bernadette's drug smuggling investigation took a brutal turn. After she deduced Spenser's cartel route through oil pipelines (the PIG clue), she confided in Officer Eleanda Garza—only to walk into a trap. The raid on Spencer's camp revealed captive migrants, but Garza, who was secretly working for the cartels, pulled a gun on Bern, leaving her fate uncertain.

The shocking twist raises several questions for the season finale: Can Bern survive? Can she expose the corruption and bring down Tom Spenser?

The episode began with Joe stranded and wounded in the desert after he faced the so-called Ye''iitosh. He was rescued by Jim Chee, who then followed the ghost, who was simply a hooded man on the run. However, the man escaped with a motorcar before Chee could catch him. It turns out that it was Joe's conscience (trauma of killing BJ Vines) that painted the hooded man as a Ye'iitosh.

The hunt for Ernesto Cata's murderer reached a turning point when Joe and Jim Chee uncovered evidence linking Dr. Reynolds, the archaeologist, to the crime from the dig site. The 'monster' or Yeiiitsoh that Joe chased in the desert was no supernatural entity—it was a human who was trying to cover the tracks. Reynolds planted a genuine Folsom arrowhead fragment at his dig site to secure funding; however, when Ernesto and George witnessed his fraud, he planned to kill the boys. While he was successful in eliminating Ernesto, George was saved and was hence trying to relocate to Reno to his mother. Thus, Dr. Reynolds was on his way to hunt down George and kill him.

Joe's relentless pursuit of justice and revenge has cost him his marriage and relationship with Emma. Emma, disillusioned by his role in BJ Vines' death, finally reached a point where she was emotionally done with her marriage. Though she lied to SA Sylvia Washington to protect Joe's alibi, her testimony was an act of loyalty and not reconciliation.

Emma then packed her bags to leave for her sister's home. Their fractured relationship, once the core of the series, is now ruined. Can Joe and Emma mend their differences and live together? Or will they separate due to Joe's obsession with the case?
