The third season of Dark Winds on AMC recently aired its sixth episode. The latest episode of Dark Winds season three was titled Ábidoo'niidę, which translates to "What He Had Been Told," and provided a surreal tour-de-force into Joe Leaphorn's vivid and, albeit, haunting dreams portrayed through enchanting and elaborate sequences.
The past definitely came to bear on Leaphorn in the latest episode of the AMC show, as his marriage to his wife, Emma, deteriorates, all the while he is chased by the guilt of his own involvement in the murder of BJ Vines. Leaphorn also revisited his memories and had an unexpected meeting with his long-gone father.
Here’s everything that we know.
What happened on the latest episode of Dark Winds season 3?
The latest episode of Dark Winds season three finally provided the audience with what it had teased in the season's premiere episode, when Leaphorn was struck by an arrow in the middle of the desert. He was seen desperately radioing for help while bleeding under the desert’s nocturnal sky. The latest episode picked up where this sequence had left off and used the arrow as a device to propel Leaphorn into having nightmarish flashbacks.
One such bizarre hallucination that Leaphorn is subjected to involves FBI Agent Washington donning a red dress, inviting him to dance while cautioning him against taking the law into his own hands, especially since he is a policeman. She dissuades Leaphorn from murdering BJ Vines, despite the latter being a pedophile predator. Moving on, Emma appears next with what appears to be soiled vegetables and complains about him spending too much time working.
This culminates in Joe meeting his father Harry, who himself was responsible for killing a priest in the past who was accused of molesting Joe’s cousin Will. By the end of the episode, Joe feels a strange and undeniable connection with his father.
Zahn McClarnon speaks about the latest episode
In an exclusive interview with TV Insider, Dark Winds star Zahn McClarnon spoke at length about his take on the latest episode:
"I think his growth this season is definitely more about self-understanding, some healing, reconciling some of his traumatic past, this season is about the choices he’s made and how they’ve affected his loved ones around him. I think as humans, we all go through painful experiences, loss, tragedy, joy, et cetera. And as an actor, I just try to lean into and draw from those lived experiences. I find it cathartic.”
He was then asked about the dance sequence involving him and Washington, to which he replied:
"I made (Jenna) wear flats (Laughs). Jenna’s just amazing. She studied dance. All she had to do was lead me. And Joe was supposed to be clumsy anyway in the sequence because he doesn’t know how to dance. We had so much fun shooting that scene, and again, she’s just such a great actress that she just nails it every time."
Dark Winds is exclusively available on AMC and AMC+.
