Dark Winds Season 3 returned to AMC on March 9, 2025. The acclaimed TV series is based on the works of author Tony Hillerman's books and features tribal police officers Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. It is modeled after True Detective, where the protagonists investigate brutal crimes. Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon return as Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee respectively.
Like the previous two seasons, Dark Winds Season 3 sheds light on the unknown philosophies and beliefs of the Navajo people. McClarnon and Chee have to deal with their personal issues while trying to find two missing boys Ernesto Cata and George Bowlegs. Meanwhile, Bernadette Manuelito has collaborated with the Border Patrol to investigate a suspicious human trafficking ring.
Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 1 Explained
Our protagonists are all in different places each reeling with the fallout of their previous actions or working on a different case altogether as in Bernadette's case. Meanwhile, both Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn are in a psychologically dark place as the former is confronting his past trauma and the latter is feeling guilt over killing BJ Vines in the Season 2 finale.
But despite already dealing with dark thoughts, the missing case of Ernesto Cata and George Bowlegs only adds to the severity of this situation. They begin their investigation by speaking with the younger brother of George Bowlegs. This conversation leads them to an archaeological site led by Teddi Issacs and Dr. Reynolds.
Teddi informs Leaphorn and Chee that the two boys were hired by Dr. Reynolds to unearth Folsom's lance points. This leads to the shocking conclusion of the Season 3 premiere where Sheriff Gordo Sera and Leaphorn find a hidden dead body in a drainage culvert. That body is that of Ernesto Cata, changing the investigation from a missing person's case to that of a murder victim.
It also means that Chee, Leaphorn, and Gordo Sera, are in a race against time to save George Bowlegs' life.

Now that one of the two boys is dead, the two tribal police offers are on a ticking clock to bring George Bowlegs back to his parents safely. The next seven episodes of the Dark Winds Season 3 will feature Joe and Jim trying to bring Ernesto's murderer to justice. At the same time, Leaphorn also has to deal with FBI Special Agent, Sylvia Washington, who is looking into BJ Vines's disappearance.
