Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 1 "Ye'iitsoh (Big Monster)" begins with a flash-forward. In that flash-forward, Joe Leaphorn calls for help through his radio in a desert at night. He is beaten to a pulp, but before we learn anything about the scene, the screen cuts to a title card reading “Seven Days Ago.” A week before the opening scene, Sheriff Gordo Sena called Leaphorn and Chee for:

Joe Leaphorn is dealing with guilt for his role in BJ Vines' death in the second season finale. Jim Chee deals with his dark past when they are called by the Sheriff. Two 14-year-old local boys, Ernesto Cata and George Bowlegs, are missing, and Sheriff Sena seeks Leaphorn and Chee's assistance in finding them. A conversation with George's brother points them in the direction of an excavation site.

At that site, the officers meet Teddi Issacs, played by Carly Roland, who tells Leaphorn and Chee that Dr. Reynolds hired the two missing boys to excavate the Folsom lance points. But she also informs the officers that George and Ernesto haven't been seen at the site for a while. This scene hints at the crucial role this archaeological site may play in the upcoming episodes of Dark Winds Season 3.

The investigation takes a dark turn in the concluding moments of the episode as the Sheriff and Leaphorn discover Ernesto's body with a lance point in his mouth. This clue points in the direction of someone from the archaeological site. Other than this gruesome case, Leaphorn has another problem.

  • Special Agent Sylvia Washington

Jenna Elfman's FBI Special Agent Sylvia Washington is a new addition to Dark Winds. She is already sharing the office with Leaphorn and Chee and has started investigating the disappearance of BJ Vines. This meant that she would be pressuring Leaphorn. Everything in Dark Winds will fall apart if she ever finds out that Leaphorn left Vines for dead in the season 2 finale.

  • Bernadette's dark discovery:

Bernadette's plot feels topical as she is working with the Border Patrol. She spends a lot of time in this episode with a Mixtec woman and her daughter. The girl hands Bernadette a drawing of a "pig." While her commanding officer advises her to let the case go, Bernadette believes that the mother and daughter were trafficked.
