Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is currently filming in New York, and it is expected to continue for the next few months. The first season ended on a cliffhanger, with Mayor Wilson Fisk scoring a major victory over our heroes and even enacting a ban on vigilantes. Thus, this storyline is expected to continue well into the second season.
Born Again Season 2 began filming right around the time Season 1 began streaming; thus, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is expected to release around the same time as the first season. Just days after the release of the season 1 finale, Dario Scardapane, the showrunner for both seasons, gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly that was published on April 18, 2025.
In this interview, the showrunner addressed various plotlines of the finale, including whether the post-credit scene was a setup for the Punisher Disney+ special and Frank Castle's involvement in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Other than that, he was also very "cagey" about the possibility of The Defenders, i.e., Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, becoming a part of Matt's army in the second season.
What did Dario Scardapane say about The Defenders' involvement in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?
The Entertainment Weekly journalist asked showrunner Dario Scardapane whether he was planning to include The Defenders characters in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. To this, Scardapane played a bit coy and answered:
"Without giving too much away...when you're working in what I would call the Hell's Kitchen corner of the MCU, those iconic characters are always in your mind. The thing is that — and this is kind of hard, I'm trying to thread a needle here — you want to bring in people and relationships and past figures in Matt's life because they help the story, particularly in terms of a story where Fisk has taken over the city. And there is a resistance and a rebellion, so to speak, rising. So there's going to be people, vigilantes, superheroes that are involved in that. There has to be because this is happening to their city. That said, you also want to create a completely organic story for that. So who comes in and why has to be beyond anything earned. So the easiest answer to your question is, yes, those characters that you just listed off are absolutely in my head and everybody's head as we're working. How that manifests itself is both really tricky writing-wise and a pretty closely guarded secret at this point. So I'm being intentionally cagey, but I'm also saying, 'Hell yeah!' in terms of it's something we're thinking about.""
At the use of the word "cagey," the interviewer asked the showrunner if the latter's usage of the word was intentional. Scardapane replied:
"Aye! ... There was a silly thing that happened, and I think I should address it: There's a character who picks up Gallo at the end of the show. His name is Luke. That's not Luke Cage. If you look closely, he's about one-third the size of Mike Colter. Everybody's looking for Easter eggs, and there are a few, but that was not one of them."
What do his comments mean for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?
While a return of The Defenders in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 isn't official, it isn't prudent if Marvel doesn't bring back Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. It will be logical to include The Defenders reunion in the second season of Born Again. Also, Matt's army could use some help from other superheroes around New York, except for Spider-Man, due to complicated rights issues.
Scardapane is not the only one hinting at a possible return of The Defenders, though. Brad Winderbaum, an executive of Marvel TV, also hinted at something similar weeks before the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, also implying something similar, saying:
“I can't say much, but I'll tell you that it's so exciting to be able to play in that sandbox. Obviously we don't have the unlimited storytelling resources like a comic book. If you can draw it, you can do it. It's dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring."
Based on these comments, The Defenders might return soon, but it is unclear if their return is seen in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
Dario Scardapane confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 will be released through streaming on Disney+ in March 2026.
