Tony Dalton plays Jack Duquesne, aka Swordsman, in Daredevil: Born Again. He appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2021 on Hawkeye and is now returning in the recent show. Jack was initially perceived as a villain, later revealed to be a more complex character who sometimes teams up with the antagonist and other times the Avengers themselves.
According to reports, he appeared in two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again. This suggests some connection between Daredevil and Hawkeye, and hence the appearance of some other characters like Clint Barton or Kate Bishop can also be expected. Read on to learn more about Swordman's previous appearances.
Where was Daredevil: Born Again Swordsman first introduced?
Four years ago, Swordsman was introduced in MCU and is now seen in episodes 5 and 6 of Daredevil: Born Again. Wilson Fisk is on a war with the city vigilantes and orders the killing of Hector, aka White Tiger. Later, Hector is shot by someone with a punisher's symbol. Matt Murdock, further investigating the case, reaches out to Punisher and requests him to help find out who is using his logo wrongly, to which he refuses.
Amidst all this, Jack Duquesne is a more refined character in MCU as compared to his comic book description. In the comic book, he first appeared in The Avengers volume 19 as a villain. However, when his original story is explored, he turns out to be not that evil.
Jack grew up in the fictional town of Sin-Cong. After the death of his father, Jack learned the art of swordsmanship. His father used to mistreat native people, and Jack used his skills to get her hometown free. He fought as a freedom fighter, and Sin-Cong gained independence. After that, he tried to save his father but was unable to.
He joined a traveling carnival and trained Clint Barton, who later became Hawkeye, in acrobatics and knife skills. He eventually starts to doubt his own skills, while gambling puts the burden of debt on him, and he resorts to stealing from the carnival. This results in a clash between Clint and Jack.
Jack is a complex character and is sometimes seen supporting Mandarin and Red Skull and sometimes the Avengers. Kate Bishop learned that Jack shares some relationship with her mother, Eleanor, while she is just using him as a cover in the Tracksuit Mafia case. It was revealed later that Kate and Eleanor Bishop are the actual antagonists of the show.
In episode 6, he is seen wearing some superhero-esque costume. Unlike the comic book, where he is shown as a freedom fighter, a circus performer, and a mentor to Clint, in MCU, his character lives a richer lifestyle collecting rare and expensive swords in Daredevil: Born Again.
