Daredevil: Born Again gave us a double treat last week. It dropped two episodes together, and a lot went down.
We finally saw Matt Murdock back in action. He was all suited up as Daredevil. We finally saw him make those slick and brutal moves we love. But that wasn’t the only highlight.
Episode 5 also gave us a surprising connection to Ms. Marvel. Her father, Yusuf Khan, popped up and even invited Matt for dinner. And then there’s Muse. The villain finally came face to face with Daredevil. And it was every bit as intense as we hoped.
Wilson Fisk, on the other hand, made a big move by launching an anti-vigilante task force. So, a lot is happening, and it’s clear that the next few episodes are going to be pretty wild.
But could this anti-vigilante task force and the gang war references be setting the stage for something even bigger? Maybe Spider-Man’s next big conflict in the MCU? Let’s get right into it.
Daredevil: Born Again - Wilson Fisk’s anti-vigilante task force
In Daredevil: Born Again Episode 6, Excessive Force, we saw Wilson Fisk take his biggest step yet in his war against masked heroes. He formed his own anti-vigilante task force. It’s handpicked by Fisk himself and is filled with the kind of cops who should be behind bars rather than enforcing the law.
But they are exactly the kind of people Fisk wants on his side.
Now, these officers in Daredevil: Born Again are getting special privileges, which basically means they can operate however they see fit to remove vigilantes. Oh, and no body cameras for them. They can do whatever it takes, and no one will be watching.
In the episode, we saw Fisk addressing his new recruits. He acknowledges their pasts and the reasons why they were cast aside by the system.
He also singled out Sergeant Cole North, a former top cop from Chicago. He lost everything because of his brutal methods. Fisk loves that about him. He needs men like North. He needs people who are willing to take extreme measures.
Their first big mission is to take down the “serial killer” terrorizing New York City in Daredevil: Born Again. Muse has been a nightmare, and Fisk is using him as the perfect excuse to launch his crusade.
This is about removing vigilantes from the streets altogether. Fisk ran his campaign on the idea that vigilantes are the bad guys. He called them cowards who hide under their masks. He promised a "clean" New York that's free of masked heroes. And now he’s making good on that promise in the most brutal way possible.
This is bad news for superheroes like Daredevil, Spider-Man, and the rest of New York City’s vigilantes. There's an army of corrupt cops ready to hunt them down now.
The Devil’s Reign storyline from Marvel Comics saw Mayor Fisk banning vigilantism in New York City. Daredevil: Born Again is now bringing that storyline to life in the MCU. We’re definitely seeing the early stages of it and can expect things to escalate in Born Again Season 2.
But this expansion could also lay the groundwork for Spider-Man 4. We could see Peter Parker forced to navigate a city where masked heroes are hunted like criminals. But that's if the movie decides to explore the impact of Fisk’s war on vigilantes.
Daredevil: Born Again - The brewing gang war
Vanessa took charge of the operations when Wilson Fisk took a break. But she started losing influence once Fisk entered the picture again. But he is no longer the Kingpin. He is the Mayor. So naturally, the power structure of New York’s underworld is shaken.
In Daredevil: Born Again Episode 3, we already saw tensions escalating. There was a shootout at the port, and gangs were at each other’s throats. Buck had stepped in to negotiate. He even outright said it:
“Truck hijackings, violence at the docks, a gang war... These are the headlines splashed across the front page of The Examiner. It all ends today.”
Luca and Viktor are at odds over money. Viktor is happy to walk away, satisfied with his $1.8 million restitution, but Luca is furious.
Vanessa had sent Buck to handle the situation, but Fisk learns about it and tells her:
“Sometimes, peace needs to get broken, and chaos must reign, just for a moment, to build a stronger order.”
He wants to let things fall apart just enough to rebuild them in his favor.
By Daredevil: Born Again Episode 6, Luca is done playing along. He goes to Fisk’s office and tells him that he won't pay Viktor. Fisk then doubles the amount. But Luca isn’t intimidated. He says:
“You’re out of the game, old man. Stay out of it."
In Daredevil: Born Again Episode 5, we saw a bank robbery happen. The lead robber’s words make it clear that they are working for Luca, and the heist was fueled by that same $1.8 million restitution. In other words, the gang war is already in motion, and innocent lives are paying the price.
Now, in Marvel Comics, the Gang War storyline saw Peter Parker fighting to keep New York City from collapsing under the weight of crime families tearing each other apart.
If Daredevil: Born Again is laying the groundwork for a similar arc, especially alongside the anti-vigilante movement, then Spider-Man 4 could be the perfect place to bring it all together.
Also, if you remember, Fisk has already mentioned Spider-Man in his campaign speeches. He had called out masked vigilantes as the real villains. So, could we see Spidey swinging into action and possibly even teaming up with Daredevil and NYC’s other street heroes?
If the comics are any indication, it’s a very real possibility.
