Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again has undergone a drastic evolution from its inception to what it is now in line to be released. In the beginning, Marvel Studios did not have something similar in store, and they might have attempted a total redesign of the show, taking it far away from the popular Netflix series.
However, because of the complaints over the direction and reception, Marvel decided to change things completely. The new direction brings back key characters and elements that were responsible for the success of the original Daredevil series, and it is thus a continuity and a reintroduction for old-time fans. Have a look at the official trailer here.
Marvel's original plan for Daredevil: Born Again
When Marvel initially pitched Daredevil: Born Again, it involved a major departure from the Netflix show. The initial idea included bringing in a whole new approach to the character, potentially taking major supporting characters like Foggy Nelson and Karen Page out of the picture.
The original script was said to concentrate less on courtroom drama and character complexity, which were core elements of the original show. Rather, it tended toward a new procedural tone, establishing Matt Murdock in a new context in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Course correction – Return to familiarity
Sensing the value of continuity, Marvel Studios changed course. The Daredevil: Born Again reboot rolled back alterations and reverted to core characters and a more traditional storytelling methodology akin to the original series. Matt Murdock's Charlie Cox and Wilson Fisk's Vincent D'Onofrio are core characters with an uninterrupted continuity thread from past events.
The revamp also tried to remain true to the dark and gritty environment that the audience had grown accustomed to seeing with Daredevil. This transition kept the show closer to what the audience desired rather than going off in a different direction.
Impact of the changes
By bringing back aspects of the original series, Marvel avoided a possible break with its current fan base. Maintaining the core elements intact allows Daredevil: Born Again to be seen as an organic continuation and not a reboot.
Furthermore, this move respects the established character arcs and development from the Netflix series so that the performances and dynamics remain consistent. This is a move that solidifies Marvel's position in providing tales that combine innovation with respect for established elements.
Marvel's second thought about re-doing its initial plan for Daredevil: Born Again has shaped the series into a known but new continuation of Matt Murdock's life. By returning key characters and sticking to the old-school storytelling format, the series is rightly filling in the blanks between the past and the future, creating a seamless experience between the old and the new fan bases.
The changes suggest that Marvel is willing to hear out criticisms from the fans and evolve, as Daredevil: Born Again stays true to its origins but experiments with things on the storytelling side.
