SPOILER ALERT! This article contains spoilers from the Daredevil: Born Again finale. Reader discretion is advised.

In the last act of the Daredevil: Born Again finale, Mayor Wilson Fisk/Kingpin brutally kills Michael Gaston's Commissioner Gallo, who was introduced in the second episode of the series. Fisk murders Gallo by smashing the latter's head with his bare hands, and the camera doesn't cut away from the commissioner's face. We even see the damage done to the commissioner by Fisk.

This proves that Daredevil: Born Again went one step further than the original Netflix show. That's because even that series featured a similar moment. But in that series, the camera is just focused on Fisk's face and not the victim's face. Thus, with this moment, the makers behind Born Again might be signaling to the fans of the original show that with this series, Disney isn't afraid to go one step further in portraying violence.

"Mayor Fisk becomes Mayor Kingpin, and Daredevil is unleashed as chaos takes over the city."

How does Commissioner Gallo die in Daredevil: Born Again, Episode 9?

In the beginning of the Daredevil: Born Again finale titled, "Straight to Hell", Commissioner Gallo tells Fisk's mayoral campaign director Sheila Rivera that he was trying get the governor involved to stop Fisk from enacting martial law in the city. But she relays this information to Wilson Fisk, thus putting the commissioner in danger. He is taken to the presence of Mayor Fisk and his anti-vigilante task force.

There, the commissioner gets to have a few verbal jabs at Wilson Fisk, to which the latter responds by attacking the former. Then, taking a page out the Netflix series, Daredevil: Born Again has Wilson Fisk repeat his move from the first season of the Netflix series by violently smashing his victim's head. But this time, the Kingpin does so with his hands instead of a car door.

Moreover, in the Netflix show, when Fisk smashes the Russian gang member's head, the camera is focused on Fisk as the viewer just hears the disgusting squishing sounds of the human skull. However, Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson don't shy away from showing the grisly scene in its entirety. Hence, Born Again might've upped the ante when it comes to violence from the original Netflix show.

Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio himself addressed this bloody moment in an interview with Variety that was published after the release of the Daredevil: Born Again finale:

"To be honest, my first reaction was, how are we going to do it? How are we going to make it different than other scenes that I’ve done? How can we make ours different than other violent scenes that have depicted the same kind of thing? I immediately started discussing ways with our producers and special effects crew that we could block the scene so that it helped execute the way I was thinking about physically making it happen. We figured it out: We did do something that feels different than what people have seen before when it comes to stuff like that. It’s pretty brutal. It’s kind of crazy as an actor to have to talk about things like that, but we want this show to be different."

When the actor was asked about whether the Kingpin will ever face the consequences of murdering the commissioner in the Born Again finale, D’Onofrio responded:

"He’s definitely in power all by himself. He still has to keep his position as mayor somehow. The killing of Commissioner Gallo is done in front of his task force, so he wants them to be as nasty as he is. Nobody has seen that killing, and it will, I’m sure, eventually be covered up."

As we wait to hear more about the second season, which is currently filming, binge the entirety of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+.
