Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again

From the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again, the audience gets a front-row seat to the married life of Wilson Fisk (played by Vincent D'Onofrio) and Vanessa (played by Ayelet Zurer). And all is not well in paradise. Their marriage, which was once filled with love is now tense and fragmented. Add to it, we learn that Venessa has had an extramarital affair. As a result the couple head for marriage counselling. Something an MCU fan would have never imagined a villain to do!

In Daredevil: Born Again, Wilson claims to have turned a new leaf and wants to follow the honorable path. While Wilson keeps an eye on New York City as its new Mayor, and its vigilantes, especially his arch nemesis Daredevil aka Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox), he realizes that he needs to fix his marriage to brace his public persona.

Vanessa and Wilson had got married in the Daredevil Netflix series. Venessa was often the driving force behind Wilson’s decisions and ventures. His love and devotion for his wife is one of the key features of his characteristics.

While they had a strong marriage, things started to spiral out of control resulting in a fractured marriage. Wilson, who was recovering from a gunshot to his head, takes a step back from the Kingpin’s criminal empire, which Venessa now rules.

What went wrong with Wilson and Venessa's marriage in Daredevil: Born Again?

After the events of Netflix Daredevil, we learn that Venessa has taken over the organized crime business while Wilson is recovering. He is now slated to become the New York City Mayor. Venessa appears much tougher than before, while Fisk, now embracing a new life seems to have softened. Or so it appears.

There is a lot of emotional conflict between the two. Wilson’s assistant points out that Venessa’s absence may not be favorable to him as a public figure. Knowing that their relationship is affecting their work, they seek professional help.

The couple met with a therapist, Heather Glenn (played by Margarita Levieva) to work on their marriage. Unknown to them, Heather is Matt’s girlfriend.

Venessa and Wilson had earlier spoken about her extramarital affair with a person called Adam. Fisk had promised her he was a different man and would not harm Adam.

During the counseling session, Heather asks them to discuss the affair to overcome the feeling of betrayal. Venessa shares that she was lonely and the affair happened in Wilson’s absence during his recovery period. Wilson insists that he wants to fix their relationship.

What can we expect next?

At the end of episode 4, it is revealed that Adam is being held captive by Wilson, despite him promising Venessa otherwise. Wilson is determined to work on his relationship, not just for the love for his wife but also to keep up his public image. It would be compelling to see them tackle the complexities of their marriage dynamics in the face of challenges.

Also, knowing Wilson’s influence, it would be interesting to see whether he is already aware of Heather’s relationship with Matt. Whether he uses it to his advantage, is something we will need to watch out for.

Seeing Kingpin Wilson Fisk in marriage counseling was not something that Marvel fans expected, but it brings forth the more humane side of the villain. As they both focus on their respective careers, it is left to be seen if the counseling repairs their broken marriage.
