Daredevil: Born Again's first episode began on a shocking note as Elden Henson's Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock's best friend, is killed by Bullseye. The episode then jumps a year to show us Matt has retired his Daredevil cowl. This was heartbreaking for many fans, as Foggy was around since the first episode of the Netflix series that began a decade ago.

Wilson Fisk, in the second half of the first episode, tells Matt that he has nothing to do with Foggy's death, and it turns out he is telling the truth. However, the mastermind who sent Benjamin Poindexter, or Bullseye, to kill Foggy is connected with Wilson — his wife, Vanessa. Fisk may currently be unaware of her role in Foggy's death, but he might learn about it in the Daredevil: Born Again finale next week.

Vanessa hired Benjamin Poindexter to kill Foggy in Daredevil: Born Again premiere

Wilson Fisk has organized a fundraiser ball and invited the therapist Heather to it. She invites Matt to the ball as a guest, but the knowledge that Wilson is her client has complicated their relationship. Matt fears that Wilson Fisk has intentionally hired Heather as a therapist to get back at him. This, and his business partner's revelation of Poindexter being transferred to a general population cell in the prison, worsens Matt's mood.

He goes to Josie's Bar in this Daredevil: Born Again episode for the first time since the night Foggy died. In the bar, Matt realizes that Foggy knew he was going to win the case in court the next day and, thus, Poindexter might have been hired by someone. Kirsten McDuffie, Matt's business partner, while informing about Poindexter's transfer, also informs Murdock about Poindexter wanting to meet him.

Matt, suspecting that Benjamin Poindexter was hired by Wilson Fisk, goes to Rikers to visit the incarcerated assassin. However, Matt doesn't get much out of Poindexter and decides to go the party as Heather's companion. However, midway through the dance with Heather, Matt realizes that Vanessa was in charge of Wilson's criminal empire when he was away in Oklahama to convince Maya to return.

Thus, he concludes that Vanessa must have hired Wilson Bethel's Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye to kill Foggy in the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again, titled Heaven's Half Hour. Matt asks Vanessa whether Wilson knew about her role in Foggy's death. However, before getting an answer, Matt hears Poindexter, who has escaped prison, loading the gun to kill Wilson. Matt jumps to take the bullet meant for Wilson, thus ending the episode on a cliffhanger.

Why did Vanessa want Foggy dead in Daredevil: Born Again?

While we don't know the reason why she wanted Foggy dead, some believe that the witness Foggy protected in the prologue of Daredevil: Born Again knew something about the five families of New York's underworld, run by the Fisks. Thus, it is possible that she had Foggy killed. It remains unknown, though, how she convinced Bullseye to kill Foggy.

The last time Poindexter and Vanessa were seen together was when he was trying to kill her in Daredevil Season 3's finale. For now, we have to wait and watch till next week for a clarification. However, we do know actress Ayelet Zurer's reaction on finding out that her character Vanessa was the mastermind behind Foggy's death in Born Again. She said this in a ScreenRant interview published after the release of the latest episode:

"I have to say that, when I read about it, I had to put it aside, and I sort of suppressed the fact that Vanessa is involved in this, and I didn't deal with him until the absolute end. Because I just couldn't take it. It's like such a miserable, sad moment to see him gone, and then to have that tie to her somehow."

Eight episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are available to stream on Disney+. Binge on them if you want before the release of the ninth and final episode of this season next Tuesday.
