It's fair to say that Daredevil: Born Again packed quite a few punches, with the unexpected death of the fan-favorite character of Foggy Nelson being the chief of them. Foggy Nelson was killed off early on in Daredevil: Born Again, and his death eventually became the inciting incident, bringing out Matt Murdock in an open battle with Wilson Fisk.

While Foggy Nelson's death and subsequent events took a different direction, Daredevil: Born Again director Aaron Moorhead recently revealed that the show does contain an Easter Egg that calls back to the original comic series.

Here's everything that we know.

Daredevil: Born Again's Foggy Nelson easter egg details revealed

Aaron Moorhead recently appeared in an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter alongside the four other directors who have worked together on Daredevil: Born Again. Moorhead revealed that the death of Foggy Nelson hid a reference to the 2006 comic edition Daredevil #88, which is also known as The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson.

The comics established that Foggy Nelson faked his own death, and thereafter, this gave rise to widespread speculation centering on the theory that Nelson's death early on in the show might be reversed in some way and the character might return eventually. Moorhead, however, said nothing to concede this belief:

"I’ve heard this theory, you eagle-eyed geniuses. I would love to tell you, however, Marvel will snipe me if I say anything else. But what is really nice about Daredevil being a street-level superhero is that, generally, the supernatural doesn’t really interact with this universe as much, even though it is within the MCU. So that often gives much stronger consequences where punches hurt more and blood means more and getting hurt means more and dying very often does mean that you’re actually dead. But that’s all I can say."

Speaking further about the decision to kill Nelson as a narrative device, Moorhead added:

"We were looking at Elden, and we started to think, ‘What right do we have (to kill Foggy)?’ But he gave us his blessing as long as we took it very seriously, and it wasn’t just meant to be something shocking. If it resonated out and was the reason that Matt did the things that he did for the rest of the show, then we’d have permission to do it.”

Directors open up about the Disney+ show

Apart from Moorhead, four other filmmakers helmed the episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, including Michael Cuesta, Justin Benson, David Boyd, and Jeffrey Nachmanoff. All of them opened up about their experience in the above-mentioned interview. When asked about how the creative overhaul affected their jobs, Nachmanoff noted:

"So there was a lot of communication between us in working on the challenges together. Having a previous well-loved show is a blessing and a curse. The blessing is not only do you have a fan base, but you also have two central actors who are incredibly comfortable and really great in these roles. So that makes your job as a director already a hundred times easier. The curse part of it is that you have expectations from fans that want to see something that’s familiar, but at the same time, part of the assignment is to create a new aesthetic and expand on what was there."

Daredevil: Born Again is exclusively available on Disney+.
