Fans of Cruel Intentions are in for a disappointment as the Prime Video show has been cancelled by the platform after its first season. As reported by Variety, the streamer has decided to pull the plug on the show. While viewership numbers have not been revealed, it can be assumed that the poor reviews and lack of good reception are behind this cancellation.

As per the official description, the show

“follows the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything, fraternities and sororities are the gold standard, and two ruthless step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil (Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Burgess), will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Greek Life system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputation – even if that means seducing Annie Grover (Smith), the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. Hearts will be broken, loyalties will be tested, and secrets will be revealed in this modern-day royal court that is Manchester College.”

Let us now explore in detail what led to the Cruel Intentions cancellation.

Cruel Intentions has been cancelled after its first season

While no definitive numbers have been shared by Amazon Prime regarding the viewership of Cruel Intentions, it should be noted that the show never featured on the Nielsen Top 10 Streaming charts. Critics were also not very kind to the show, as it only received a 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In all probability, these low ratings and scores have led to the cancellation of the show. While the show was based on the 1999 cult film of the same name, the film in turn was adapted from Les Liaisons Dangereuses, a 1782 novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.

Despite its steamy premise and multiple good actors and creative minds on board, Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions failed to make an impression, leading to its cancellation just after one season.

This also means that people who had watched the show will be left with unanswered questions because season 1 did leave a number of unresolved plot points. While some major answers were given by the end of the first season, a lot was left to explore, which, unfortunately, will not be happening now.

More about Cruel Intentions

The main cast of Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions included Sarah Catherine Hook, Savannah Lee Smith, and Zac Burgess. The other recurring and important characters of the show were played by Khobe Clarke, Sara Silva, Brooke Lena Johnson, John Harlan Kim, Sean Patrick Thomas, etc.

Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman served as the showrunners for the series. It should be noted here that the film Cruel Intentions also did not receive massive audience and critics’ appreciation, but it somehow worked, probably because it was a 1 hour 37 minutes long film. However, a series with multiple episodes and seasons needs to have a lot more material than that of an hour-and-a-half-long film to make it work.

With a combination of all these reasons, the show now stands cancelled. It now remains to be seen if any official update from the concerned people or studio is given any time soon.

Cruel Intentions Season 1 can be streamed on Prime Video.
