The ending of the first season of Cross finally revealed Maria’s murderer and also explored the motivations behind Ed Ramsey being a serial killer. Based on the Alex Cross books by James Patterson, the show had started on a rather grim note, with the protagonist Alex Cross losing his wife, Maria, as she is murdered.
Following this, as Cross struggles with the grief of losing his wife and talking to his children, he also has to deal with a dangerous serial killers’ case. As the show proceeds, it is revealed that Cross and his family are still stalked by Maria’s killer, who is apparently going to end his murderous spree with a final kill.
As Alex realizes time is running out, he makes the best use of his deductive skills and eventually untangles the mystery that surrounds the killer’s motive. Let us now explore in detail the ending of Cross Season 1 and Maria’s killer’s identity.
The following article contains spoilers.
Who killed Maria in Cross Season 1?
By the end of Cross Season 1, Maria’s killer’s identity is finally revealed. To understand who her killer was, it is important to go back to the fourth episode, which opened with a flashback.
It was shown in the flashback that a woman named Dierdre was sentenced to life imprisonment for apparently killing an innocent man. The biggest reason behind her being imprisoned was that Alex testified against her in court and also claimed with conviction that she showed signs of a
"psychopathic personality."
Following Cross’ suggestion that Dierdre was not fit to return back into the society, the judge had sentenced her for life, despite her not having committed any crimes previously.
After she was imprisoned, Dierdre got abused by fellow inmates and eventually committed suicide. When Alex looked into his case, he came to know that she was frequently visited by a man named Peter. Alex then goes on to visit Peter’s case manager and learn that both Dierdre and Peter often visited someone named
“street mother.”
As Peter tries to identify who that person is, he eventually realizes that it’s none other than Miss Nancy, the new piano teacher for her son. Therefore, by the end of Cross Season 1, it becomes clear that it was Peter and Nancy who plotted the murder of Maria and they also stalked Alex and his family as they held him responsible for Dierdre’s imprisonment and eventual death.
They believed that Alex’s testimony was the main reason behind Dierdre’s punishment and therefore, they wanted revenge. However, Alex ultimately exposed that it was Nancy who convinced Dierdre to take blame for the murder that Peter committed, as she believed Dierdre would face a light sentence for being a white woman who did not have any criminal past.
What happened to Ed Ramsey in Cross Season 1?
At the end of Cross Season 1, it is proven that though Ed Ramsey has always had new tricks up his sleeves, Alex somehow manages to get ahead of him towards the end. This ensures that Ed remains unsuccessful in murdering his final victim, Shannon.
In the final moments of season 1 finale, it is shown that Cross and his team have all the necessary evidence against Ed and the 11 murders he has done. Though there is enough proof to convict him, the police realize that it was exactly what he wants.
They do not want him to be able to leave a legacy behind like the famous serial killers around the world and thus they burn the scrapbook that contains all the evidence against him. He is shown a live video of John Sampson burning his scrapbook as this tortures him more than anything else ever would.
With Ben Watkins, the creator of Cross hinting at a new killer in the second season of the show, it remains to be seen what new crimes Alex Cross would be dealing with in future.
Cross can be streamed on Prime Video.
