Frank Grillo is now known to the audiences of Creature Commandos as Rick Flag Sr. The debut season of Creature Commandos consists of a rag-tag group of monsters headed by Amanda Waller. Apart from his appearance in DC's Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo has also appeared as Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones across the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Having had the privilege of working on two of the most sought-after superhero universe iterations, Frank Grillo recently stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he prefers to work on the DC universe as compared to the MCU.

Frank Grillo went on to state that working on the DC universe, and in collaboration with James Gunn, he has felt that the process is more "contained" and more "personal". He also revealed that he likes being associated with a project in its embryonic stage before it blows up into a full-blown successful franchise.

Frank Grillo opens up about his Creature Commandos experience

Frank Grillo had the advantage of hindsight when he stated that he preferred working on the DC universe as compared to the MCU. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he stated:

"They're very different, Marvel's a different machine, and it’s great in its own right, but the thing I love about James' and Peter’s DC is that it's much more contained. It’s so much more personal and I really enjoy it better. I just love being part of something in the embryonic stage and being able to grow with it and watch it and flourish.”

Creature Commandos isn't the only new show in which Frank Grillo is making an appearance. It has been confirmed by the actor that his character, Rick Flag Sr., will also be making appearances in the upcoming Peacemaker, and Superman.

Grillo stated:

"With Creature Commandos and Peacemaker, Flag is a prominent figure in the stories. With Superman, he kind of just drops in."

Speaking about his character, Grillo further added:

"There was a rawness, and also a naïveté, about him in Creature Commandos, especially when he gets cornered by the Princess Ilana, I used that stuff as a template when doing the live-action. I find that interesting, that the big strong muscular leader is also a vulnerable guy, and there are times where he doesn’t know what to do. I think that’s important. That’s what James is great at, creating these vulnerabilities in otherwise impenetrable superheroes.”

It is a known fact that while shooting for Peacemaker and Superman, Grillo was also committed to finishing the filming for Taylor Sheridan's, Tulsa King. He commented about how he juggled the separate roles:

"Unfortunately, we shot some of the Peacemaker and Superman while I was in the middle of shooting Tulsa King, so we were limited to what we could do with my hair, I had to just use what I had and try to make it as interesting as I could. I had every intention of dying it white and slicing it up, but I just couldn’t do it.”

Who is Rick Flag Sr. from Creature Commandos?

The extensive backstory of Rick Flag Sr. is yet to be revealed by DC. However, much is known that Rick Flag Sr. is the father of the character, Rick Flag. The latter was killed by John Cena's Peacemaker in Suicide Squad, which was also the first DC film helmed by James Gunn. Grillo reiterated that there is a duality to his character when he stated:

"I think all of us are monsters inside. We have sides of us that are ugly to look at sometimes. Just because Flag doesn't have that on the exterior, it doesn't mean it's not going on inside. Flag’s a dark guy, and I think that's why he can relate to these creatures.”
