After defeating Circe at a cost in the closing moments of Episode 3 of Creature Commandos, Chasing Squirrels, the fourth one, begins on a happier and lighter note. This contrasts with the darker stories that unravel as Creature Commandos Season 1 Episode 4 continues.
This episode achieves two things, jettisoning the plot in an exciting direction and delivering James Gunn's promise of one of the most tragic stories ever. The synopsis for this episode reads this:
"The Creature Commandos return home in hopes of understanding Circe's motivations. While his lawyer tries to coax him for answers, Weasel reflects on the events that landed him in Belle Reve in the first place."
Rick Flag Sr.'s Complex Feelings in Creature Commandos
In the opening moments of this episode of Creature Commandos, Princess Ilana Rostovic expresses strong feelings for Flag, causing the latter to leave her on an abrupt note. Upon reaching Belle Reve, he, Waller, and John Economos (Steve Agee returning from Peacemaker Season 1) start interrogating Circe.
The Amazonian sorceress justifies her attack on the Princess as trying to save the world. She offers Waller to show the dark future that supposedly lies ahead as Ilana is still alive. Waller is disturbed by what's shown to her and immediately deploys Task Force M (M for Monsters) to Pokolistan for an important mission, to kill Princess Ilana.
Flag exits the team and tries and fails to warn the Princess. Frankenstein attacks Flag at the latter's home under the misconception that Flag and The Bride are having an affair. But Flag after beating Frankenstein in hand-to-hand combat clears off the misconception. In the end, they both decide to team up.
Meanwhile, in the prison, Nina and The Bride form a closer bond as the latter stands up for the former. Then, the entire team, minus Flag is sent back to Pokolistan (with The Bride as the leader), without them knowing the actual mission of killing Rostovic. En route, The Weasel is sleeping and he is dreaming, setting up the tragic story.
The Origins of the Weasel Revealed
His dream is more of a flashback that tells us how he ended up in Belle Reve. Turns out, he did not murder the kids he was accused of killing. In the beginning, we meet his lawyer Elizabeth "Betty" Bates (voiced by Linda Cardellini) trying to prove innocence. This episode of Creature Commandos validates her theory through this flashback.
It is revealed that Weasel became good friends with the kids and they regularly played near the school. On an ill-fated day, an old man sees this and mistakenly believes that Weasel is attacking the children.
He calls the cops on Weasel and follows the unlucky creature and kids inside the school where they are playing. The man accidentally starts a fire inside the school by firing his gun, causing the school to explode. He and most of the kids die except for Weasel and one girl, whom Weasel tries to save. But, cops arrive and open fire on Weasel, causing him to drop the girl, who perishes.
Weasel cries in agony, as he is wrongfully arrested by the police. This memory, makes Weasel react viscerally in the plane as he is sleeping. Nina looking at his moving body asks The Bride what The Weasel is seeing in his dreams. The Bride nonchalantly replies that he is probably chasing squirrels in the dream, earning the episode its title.
What does Waller see in Circe's Vision?
Looks like Creature Commandos Season 1 Episode 4 continues a DCEU tradition. Just like the "Knightmare" scene in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder's Justice League, this Creature Commandos episode also has provided viewers with a dystopian future.
Circe shows Waller a vision in which we see several DC heroes dead. Characters like Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Peacemaker, and Robin are all dead and we see their bodies. The source of all this death and destruction is Princess Ilana Rostovic.
Waller is completely shaken by this vision and confirms Circe's Clairvoyancy with Dr. Aisla MacPherson (voiced by Detective Roza Diaz's Stephanie Beatriz). In the comics, Dr. MacPherson teaches history at Gotham Academy, but fans are speculating if she is her namesake or some major character in hiding.
Unwilling to risk the fate of the world Waller sends The Bride and her team to Pokolistan to kill the Princess. However, it is still unclear how the rest of the series will play out. Also, does Rostovic break bad and go evil or is she mind-controlled? The latter possibility can't be ruled out.
The Lanterns series has the heroes uncover something sinister on Earth. What if, the sinister thing is the anti-life equation, a formula that can control the mind of everyone from humans to non-humans? More importantly, how does Superman die here? We don't see anything remotely kryptonite near his body.
Was he stabbed by a sharp kryptonite object or was his weakness to magic exploited? Magic was one of Superman's weaknesses initially, but nowadays that part is more or less ignored. Is Gunn bringing back Superman's vulnerability to magic? More importantly, will this vision come to pass? Or will this nightmarish future averted? There is only one way to find out the answer.
