We first saw Clayface in "The Iron Pot," the fifth episode of Creature Commandos. However, towards the end of that episode, we see the shape-shifting supervillain getting electrocuted by Eric Frankenstein. After that, we also see his remains in the seventh episode, when Amanda Waller visits Professor Aisla MacPherson's home. Therefore, we were under the impression that Clayface was dead in the DCU.
But, James Gunn has recently revealed that Clayface might be alive in the DCU. This has major implications for DCU's Batman and even the upcoming Clayface movie in which Mike Flanagan is involved. Until now, we thought the solo film would feature a different character, but that might not be the case.
Creature Commandos' Clayface's Fate Explored
A brutal brawl broke out at Professor MacPherson's home between Clayface, Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein. Clayface breaks Flag just like Bane breaks Batman. But, later Clayface is seemingly killed by Eric through electrocution. His fate remained unclear for over a month because a solo Clayface movie was also announced.
James Gunn's recent social media clarification hints at the character's status in the DCU. A fan on Bluesky asked Gunn whether the DCU version of Clayface was dead. Gunn responded to the question by saying:
"The reports of Clayface’s death have been greatly exaggerated. He is quite mushy though."
As James Gunn's latest Bluesky post suggests, the Clayface we saw in the fifth Creature Commandos episode might still be alive. In the previous animated iterations, electricity is something Clayface could survive even if it can hurt him. Possibly, we can even learn which version of Clayface is this character that is voiced by Alan Tudyk, who also voices Clayface in the Harley Quinn series.
How does this affect the DCU Batman and solo Clayface movie?
The confirmation that he is alive might also suggest that this version of Clayface could appear in a DCU Batman in the future or even might be the protagonist of the solo Clayface movie. After Creature Commandos, the character could serve as one of the antagonists in a future DCU Batman project. However, the solo movie could change the character's trajectory in the entire DCU.
The solo Clayface movie releasing in 2026 is believed to be a mix of thriller, tragedy, and horror as Mike Flanagan expressed interest way back in 2021. However, we don't have any plot details of this movie, but given Flanagan's track record, it won't be surprising if this movie falls under the horror genre. Moreover, it can also set up the supervillain as one of Batman's allies like he sometimes is in the comics.
What's next for the DCU and where can Clayface appear?
Creature Commandos concluded on January 9, 2025, and the next project underway is Superman directed by James Gunn. A Clayface appearance seems unlikely in either Superman, Lanterns, Sgt. Rock, or Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. So, the character's first appearance could be in The Brave and the Bold or even Creature Commandos Season 2.
The animated series featuring Task Force M was renewed for season 2 on December 23, 2024. Amy Gravitt, the comedy programming head at HBO & Max put out a statement after the renewal saying:
“Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”
So, where do you think we will see Clayface next, and are you excited about the solo movie featuring the supervillain? If you forgot about the character, you can rewatch the fifth Creature Commandos episode, "The Iron Pot," on Max.
