We recently learned the DC characters that almost could've been part of the Creature Commandos or Task Force M. James Gunn, on January 25, 2025, posted two images celebrating Krypto the Superdog. One of the fans commented appreciating Creature Commandos and asked Gunn if he went through a different roaster of characters like Gunn did for The Suicide Squad.
Gunn replied to the fan saying that four characters from the DC Comics lore almost became a part of the team, or even appeared in Creature Commandos. The four characters in question are Man-Bat (a Batman villain), Wolfpack, Solomon Grundy (another Batman character), and Vincent Velcoro.
Who are the characters that were not part of Creature Commandos?
Thanks to James Gunn, we now know the characters that almost became part of Task Force M. We got to know this because James Gunn posted two images of Krypto, one from his Superman movie and the other from the comics celebrating the Man of Steel's pet. Later, a fan commented on the post, saying:
"Hey @jamesgunn, really enjoyed Creature Commandos. Like with The Suicide Squad, did you go through a number of different characters for the team before going with the ones that you chose? And which characters did you consider for the team early on?"
This was the director and DC Studios Co-CEO's reply:
"I definitely considered Wolfpack, and, especially, Man-Bat (one of my faves). But I knew I wanted to tell Weasel’s story so it felt like too many rabid and fuzzy characters. I considered Vincent Velcoro but wanted to choose a “creature” far outside the usual roster from another part of DC - so I went with Dr. Phosphorous instead. I also considered Solomon Grundy, another favorite, but was pretty set on Frankenstein."
Here's who these characters are:
1. Man-Bat
Man-Bat is a Batman character. Man-Bat's secret identity is Dr. Kirk Langstrom who transformed into a giant bat after an experiment went wrong. Man-Bat was the villain in the very first Batman: The Animated Series episode "On Leather Wings".
2. Wolfpack
Usually, a member of the Creature Commandos, Warren Griffith/Wolfpack, is a soldier with the powers of a werewolf. In the comics, he was a part of Project M, which gave him the powers to fight in World War II.
3. Vincent Velcoro
After getting injected with a modified Man-Bat serum, Velcoro transformed into a vampire and got the ability to fly and superhuman strength. He also carries two pieces of equipment called M.U.S.O. (Muscle Utilizing and Schooling Outfit) and E.L.A.R.M.(Emergency Limb Augmentation and Regeneration Machine). M.U.S.O. helps him fly while E.L.A.R.M. helps Vincent heal his damaged wings.
4. Solomon Grundy
In the Batman comics, Cyrus Gold is a corrupt man who dies in an area called Slaughter Swamp. However, he returned as a monster, who is sometimes harmless, sometimes a mindless monster, and sometimes a dangerous monster with extraordinary intelligence. This personality change can be explained. Every time Grundy dies, he returns to life with different personalities.
Based on the character descriptions above, these four characters would fit perfectly in Creature Commandos. Here's to hoping that they can appear in the second season of the animated series.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that these four characters did not make it to the show? If so, are you hoping that they appear in Creature Commandos Season 2? Let us know.
