Indira Varma is the voice of the Bride of Frankenstein in the animated series Creature Commandos from HBO. Viewers have recently been given insight into what to expect from her in the second season. After the events of season 1, her role will put the Bride forward in a key position as team leader for Creature Commandos

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Varma revealed that her character evolves from a killing machine to a girl who can lead people and inspire people. The season 1 finale ended with the Bride experiencing a moment of change after the death of her teammate Nina Mazursky, who is voiced by Zoe Chao.

Varma said that in that moment of tragic death, she was a catalyst for the Bride's emotional awakening.

"She realizes that she can be more than just a killing machine," Varma said.

This brings on an exciting new chapter because the Bride gets ready to understand her humanity and overcome past traumas.

Varma also has potential storylines involving her strained relationship with Eric Frankenstein, voiced by David Harbour, and adds layers to the intricate narrative of the show. Fans are bound to see her face in navigating the new role as well as further development of the character in Creature Commandos season 2.

The Bride's evolution: From killer to leader

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Indira Varma broke out about the Bride's emotional trajectory in Creature Commandos season 1. Characterized in early episodes as cool and disconnected, she gets to break into a change through her budding connection with Nina Mazursky.

Varma described her recording sessions with Zoe Chao, the actress, helping add richness to their friendship, saying,

“Zoe's character is so soft and sweet, she’s a really great foil for the Bride's attitude of ‘f--- life, this is all s---’.

This relationship finally comes to its climax in the season finale, "A Very Funny Monster," where Nina's death forces the Bride to realize her humanity. As Varma puts it, this is the moment in which the Bride grows beyond her past as Victor Frankenstein's creation.

"Hopefully it’s a great payoff in the finale episode, because it’s only when Nina’s in trouble that things fall into place and it’s like an awakening. She realizes that she can be more than just a killing machine." she explained.

This sets the stage for her to take on a leadership role in Creature Commandos Season 2.

Complicated Relationships in Creature Commandos: The Bride and Eric Frankenstein

Another central theme that needs to be delved into further is the Bride's complicated past with Eric Frankenstein. In the earlier episodes, it was already established that the Bride had a sexual relationship with her creator, Victor Frankenstein, voiced by Peter Serafinowicz, instead of her intended husband, Eric. This betrayal drove Eric to murder Victor and to spend years seeking the Bride.

Varma expressed interest in delving deeper into this dynamic in Creature Commandos season 2. She said,

“I'm sure it won't happen, but I'd be intrigued to see how unrequited love might become requited love. That could be a fun, emotional thing to explore,”
“I feel like there's more to come with her, and this is just the introduction. We’ve seen how she behaves, and we've seen the beginnings of a human soul in there. She’s becoming someone who might be able to get over her trauma and start seeing the world in a slightly more positive way.”

David Harbour, who voices Eric, praised Varma’s performance, saying,

“You're doing your thing and you're assuming a certain idea of what the other character is, but then to hear it, I was just so surprised and impressed with her and what she did with that character, I just loved it.”

Future potential: Live-action possibilities

With James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe ensuring continuity across animation, live-action, and video games, Varma’s portrayal of the Bride might not be limited to animation. When asked about the possibility of playing the character in live-action, Varma was enthusiastic.

“Yeah, of course! I’m only human,” Varma says.
“Have you seen what she looks like?”, she said, referencing the character’s striking appearance.

Gunn's method of character development and the fact that he likes telling high-stakes stories mean the Bride's story is not at all done yet. Creature Commandos Season 2 will show her growing up as a leader and working towards coming to terms with her traumatized past.

With Creature Commandos on the horizon for its sophomore season, audience expectations for The Bride of Frankenstein will grow into a tantalizing transformation as Indira Varma has outlined for the viewers: the step into a command position and constant conflict with emotional entanglement.

Her enhanced humanity and tensions still with Eric Frankenstein provide enough dramatic weight for her character.
