Netflix’s Zero Day is a high-octane drama focusing on a cyberattack that wreaks havoc in the US. A task force is then established, headed by former President George Mullen, to investigate the people behind the attack and ensure it does not happen again.
The show has become popular due to its gripping storyline and a stellar cast led by Robert De Niro as George Mullen. However, it only features six episodes, all of which premiered on February 20, 2025.
Fans who binge-watched the show are awaiting updates on Zero Day season 2. Well, Netflix has not officially renewed the show for a second installment, and originally created it as a limited series. However, it is speculated that there is still a possibility of the show’s continuation. Keep reading to find out how.
The renewal status of Zero Day Season 2 on Netflix
Zero Day season 2 has not officially been greenlit by Netflix. The show was intended to be a limited series, which generally lasts for one season. However, the show has garnered massive viewership due to its star power, which could convince the streamer to renew it for another season.
The political thriller continues to perform well on the streaming charts. In the past, there have been instances where miniseries have been turned into multi-season projects after the audience’s positive response, like Netflix’s Beef and FX’s Shōgun. Hence, the possibility of Zero Day Season 2 is not entirely ruled out.
The series creators have also expressed interest in working with the team again. Meanwhile, Robert De Niro has said that a second season is not out of the question as the story can be explored further. The actor said in an interview with The Wrap:
“I don’t know whether it would be a continuation of the situation with the character. It could very well be an interesting second part of what we’re going through. Of course, there’s a lot of ways to go and everything is moving so fast, but it’s not out of the question.”
“I mean, with Eric, and Noah Oppenheim and Mike Schmidt [series creators], they could very, very easily, in some ways, come up with something that’s special. We all would agree on that.”
However, the final decision lies with Netflix, and it remains to be seen if the streamer decides to renew Zero Day for a sophomore installment.
What could Zero Day Season 2 be about?
As the show has not been officially renewed, there aren’t any plot details available. The first season mostly featured a self-contained story, where the officials who had betrayed the government and participated in the cyberattack were exposed.
If the show continues, the creators might delve more into how the attack was planned and reveal the rest of the people who were responsible for it. At the same time, the threat can go international and involve more nations, making the cyberattack a global catastrophe that would further raise the stakes.
George Mullen’s personal life could also be explored in the potential second season, as it has already been hinted that he might have Proteus syndrome. The illness could cause trouble for the former President as he continues to fight for the people of his country.
If the second season does get made, it would be incomplete without Robert De Niro. As the actor has already expressed interest in working again with the team, he would be expected to return as George Mullen. The rest of the cast would depend on the storyline of the second season.
All episodes of Zero Day are currently streaming on Netflix.
