James Bond fans woke up to the shocking news in the early hours of February 20, 2025, after learning that Amazon MGM Studios has full creative control of the iconic film franchise. The beloved film franchise, which dates back to 1962, was produced by the Broccoli family until now. Now that Amazon MGM Studios has complete creative control, fans are wondering if the next entry will be a show.

While nothing is official as of now, given that the studio has the creative control of the franchise, it likely will be the case that the James Bond franchise may include some spin-offs too. The idea that the direction of the Bond franchise will be dictated by Amazon MGM Studios is incensing fans. But this move has been building for at least two months now.

Amazon MGM Studio's control over the James Bond film franchise explained:

As stated before, this action is not random or came out of nowhere. Back on December 19, 2024, the WSJ published an exposé about the development of the next James Bond movie after No Time to Die. It revealed that Amazon MGM Studios and Barbara Broccoli were not on great terms because both parties were at an impasse regarding the next entry in the 007 franchise.

While fans were hoping for some sort of reconciliation between these two parties, it clearly was never on the table. It needs to be noted that this is not a takeover, it's just that producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who maintained creative control over the franchise have opted to relinquish that control. Amazon MGM Studios put out a statement reading:

"Amazon MGM Studios, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli today announced that they have formed a new joint venture to house the James Bond intellectual property rights, and those parties will remain co-owners of the franchise. Under the terms of the new venture, Amazon MGM Studios will gain creative control of the James Bond franchise following closing of the transaction."

Mike Hopkins, who serves as the current head of Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, had this to say:

“Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment. We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to movie theatres around the world, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their unyielding dedication and their role in continuing the legacy of the franchise that is cherished by legions of fans worldwide. We are honoured to continue this treasured heritage, and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”

Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson also put out their own separate statements. Broccoli's statement read:

“My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time to Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.”

While Michael G. Wilson put this out:

“With my 007 career spanning nearly 60 incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future.”
