Clyde Phillips's crime drama series for Showtime, Dexter: Original Sin, revolves around the origin story of the titular character, set about fifteen years prior to the main show Dexter (premiered in 2006). As Dexter is now bedridden and awaiting death, he looks back in time, reflecting upon the time when he was young (Patrick Gibson plays the young Dexter).

Dexter: Original Sin explores his early years and association with the Miami Metro P.D. The story entails the journey of an orphaned kid who had a troubled childhood and how a heinous act from years back (his mother's murder, which he witnessed) eventually changed him into a man with killer urges born out of inherent hatred for criminals.

The prequel show further portrays Dexter's psychological changes as he tries to control his killer instincts and moral code (especially for criminals) while working for the forensics team of the Miami Police. As Season 1 finale drops, speculations have peaked around a potential second chapter, though nothing is confirmed as of now. However, lead star Gibson has reportedly mentioned in a statement saying he "would love to" reprise his role.

Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 is yet to be officially confirmed

The announcement of a sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, featuring original star Michael C. Hall, earlier this year has left lots of questions for fans. The timeline of the story and the connection across various shows are some major points of discussion at the moment—not to mention the possibility of Dexter: Original Sin Season 2.

Keeping this in mind, viewers are now digging through Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 finale, which aired today, to get an idea of what lies in the future of the franchise. However, star Patrick Gibson has still left hopes high for his crime drama fans while talking about the Showtime series' return. He reportedly mentioned:

"I would love to. I had such a great time doing this and everybody involved is so incredible, to have Clyde, the original showrunner, involved and still doing it, and the cast was also great that I would feel so, so lucky to come back again."

According to his statements, Gibson considers Dexter: Original Sin to be a "pilot series," and he wants to witness the evolution of Dexter "with his methods.". He further added:

"I hthink the stakes just get higher and higher with this show, naturally, and so that's been really interesting to see. And also some characters that we haven't got to meet yet from the original would be cool."

Since its debut, the Dexter franchise has reached out to the audience and bagged good scores from the critics as well. With multiple spin-offs in play, the exact timeline of Gibson's return to Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 still remains uncertain. However, it is being speculated that some original cast members will return for the prequel show, and that leaves the possibility of a second season much in consideration.

What have fans speculated about a possible Season 2 of Dexter: Original Sin?

Another user on Reddit, Long-Huckleberry7738, reportedly expressed an urge to see a main character return. He said:

"Personally, I’m most excited for a young Doakes. They’ve knocked it out of the park as far as casting so far, so I can only assume they will do the same with his character."

One more user, TheSystolicGem, added:

"I don't think we'll get a full Vogel storyline since Clyde Phillips seems to omit plotlines that happened in later seasons of the og show but yeah it would be interesting to see Doakes and Matthew's in a hypothetical season 2."
