Ever since HBO announced the Harry Potter television series, fans have been excited to know who fits the bill to play the various iconic wizards. While the makers are looking for new actors to play the lead trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, they are reportedly open to casting established stars for the older roles.
While the creators are yet to finalize the cast, fans are trying their best to get Andrew Garfield on board to play Remus Lupin, played by David Thewlis, in the film series. Several fan edits are doing the rounds of social media, showing how Garfield would justify the role of the werewolf and the Hogwarts teacher.
Neither the actor nor the show’s producers have confirmed his involvement in the project. However, Garfield has hinted that he is open to being a part of the Harry Potter television series.
Andrew Garfield has not been finalized to play Remus Lupin in HBO's Harry Potter TV show
As of now, HBO has not announced any of the official cast of the Harry Potter TV series. The rumors around Andrew Garfield playing Remus Lupin in the show gained momentum due to fan castings.
However, when Garfield was asked about his potential appearance in the series, the actor neither confirmed nor denied his involvement and said that he was open to playing any character that came his way. He told BBC:
“This is like a question that I don't know how to answer. I will consider any role offered, how's that?”
Hence, it looks like the ball is in HBO’s court for now, who will eventually decide if they want to offer the role to Garfield. The Amazing Spider-Man star had opened up about fans’ wish to see him in a Harry Potter project earlier as well.
During an appearance on WIRED Autocomplete Interviews, Garfield came across a fan question, asking which Harry Potter film he has been a part of, to which the actor replied:
“Hahahaha! I don’t know! Pretty sure none. I’m flattered to be considered a Marauder. A fan cast, if you will of a young Remus Lupin in the Marauders. That’s a sweet thought and I appreciate your consideration.”
Meanwhile, the internet continues to dream about Garfield’s casting as Remus Lupin, considering the actor’s talent and looks. There are several tweets, Reddit threads, YouTube edits, and TikToks that highlight how the 41-year-old actor would be an ideal choice for the role. One Reddit user wrote:
“I am certain that the show is aware of the fan cast. Francesca Gardiner is an avowed Potterhead by her own description. I don’t think you can be in the fandom without knowing about the Andrew Garfield fan cast.”
Another fan penned:
I would so love him as Remus. I think he might bring a very interesting energy to the role.”
Played by David Thewlis in the film series, Remus Lupin is first introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as the teacher of Defense Against the Dark Arts at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
He is later revealed to be a werewolf who joins the Order of the Phoenix and has a significant role to play in the war against Voldemort. Since the TV show is said to be a more faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books, Remus Lupin’s character will likely be explored in more depth in the series.
Meanwhile, there have been reports of HBO being in talks with actor Mark Rylance to play Albus Dumbledore in the show. However, the contract has not been finalized yet.
The Harry Potter TV series will debut on the streaming platform Max sometime in 2026.
