The 82nd Golden Globes Awards on January 2025, gave comic book fans a reason to celebrate. Irish actor, Colin Farrell, won the Golden Globes under the Best Performance in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television category. This is not the first time the genre was awarded at the Golden Globes though.
DC especially has a history of winning this prestigious award. Before Collin Farrell, both Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix won the Golden Globes Awards in 2009 and 2020 respectively. However, while Farrell won the award for his role as The Penguin, both Ledger and Phoenix won Golden Globes for portraying The Joker. Collin Farrell was asked about his reaction to joining the other two DC actors later.
What did Collin Farrell say about the Golden Globe Win?
After his Golden Globes win, Collin Farrell was asked by a journalist about how he felt after joining Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix. Initially, he joked saying:
"Two-one to the Joker. Two-one to the Joker takes it."
However, he further answered this question and said:
“You mentioned two actors who are, I think, for my money, two of the most extraordinarily talented and gifted and just brilliant artists in films that I’ve ever had the fortune to observe and be affected by. What Heath did in Chris Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ was extraordinary, and will will live on for future generations. And what [Phoenix] did with the Joker was exemplified by all the awards that he won, at the Oscars. It was extraordinary. It was so special, both of them. So to have your name just uttered in the same sentence as those performances, honestly, it’s lovely, but still I’m more of just a fan of it all! I don’t feel like I’m part of that pantheon. Jaoquin and Heath, just two extraordinary and honest great actors.”
Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix's Golden Globes win explored
While the reaction to his casting news was met negatively, Heath Ledger impressed both people and critics with his interpretation of The Joker. But he wasn't around to enjoy the appreciation for his performance as he passed away in January 2008, before the film's release.
While he went on to posthumously win the Oscars for portaying Joker in 2009, he also won the Golden Globes in January 2009 under the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture category.
Almost a decade later, Joaquin Phoenix also won both Oscars and Golden Globes for the same role as Ledger. However, Phoenix won under a different category. He won under the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama category. He won these awards for his role in the 2019 movie Joker.
Joining these two stalwarts is Collin Farrell, who won the Golden Globes for his role as Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot aka The Penguin in The Penguin.
What is The Penguin about?
The critically acclaimed series is set after the events of The Batman. It follows Collin Farrell's The Penguin trying to fill the power vacuum left in the Gotham underworld after Falcone's death. However, to get that power, Oz has to prevail over Sofia Falcone and Sal Maroni.
The show ended with Oz successfully gaining the power he was seeking, setting up his role for The Batman Part II. However, it is yet to be confirmed if The Penguin was a limited series, or will there be a season 2. You can marvel at Golden Globes winner Collin Farrell's impressive performance as The Penguin in Max.
