Cobra Kai, an action comedy drama sequel to The Karate Kid, has been a favorite of fans over the years. It recently garnered widespread social media attention owing to Season 6 Part 3. The final chapter premiered on Netflix a day before Valentine's and is currently streaming on OTT.
Via an X update, Cobra Kai creator Hayden Schlossberg mentioned why Tory's victory in the Sekai Taikai final made more sense. He has further talked about Samantha LaRusso dropping out of the tournament, thus allowing a much-anticipated Tory versus Zara final. The Tory-Zara rivalry had been raging for a long time, and given their past conflicts and Tory's situation, Schlossberg explained that her winning the tournament was more appropriate.
Cobra Kai creator justifies why Sam did not win Sekai Taikai final
The ending of Cobra Kai Season 6 left fans in awe as Tory Nichols came out with flying colors in the final Sekai Taikai fight against Zara Malik. As explained by Hayden Schlossberg on his social media handle, Sam's victory in the final match was initially in consideration but plans changed later on.
However, the story deserved Tory (given her situation) more in the slot against Zara owing to their history of rivalry and face-off. It also shifted all the focus on Tory, who needed to win Sekai Taikai - which was justified by Hayden, who said that everyone hopes that the "poorer kid" gets the victory. His exact words were:
"There was brief talk of Sam winning, but the story we went with was the one we felt was most fulfilling. At the end of the day, most people want the poorer kid to win. Unfortunately for Robby, Miguel is on equal economic footing."
His comments also made it clear that Tory had gone through a more challenging journey till the final and had greater reasons to be standing in the champions' arena. Sam forfeiting the semi-final match also meant that she had nothing much to put up a fight for and that her character had already got closure from the plotline.
Hayden also mentioned that the creative team went through similar problems while choosing between Miguel and Robby. However the former's deep-rooted connection to the dojo made him the better pick eventually.
On the other hand, Sam had initially always found Tory quite formidable owing to the mistreatment she received from her. However, in the latter part of Cobra Kai Season 6, the two characters come to terms and drop their tussle. It was sort of an achievement for Sam, and she naturally felt that it was no longer required for her to continue the fight.
Thus, her skipping the semi-finals against Tory made more sense to the storyline, and fans also got to witness a high-intensity Sekai Taikai final. It thus implicated a complete character arc for both Tory and Sam.
