Chicago P.D. Season 1,2 Episode 17 recap: Kevin and Val's date is interrupted
Chicago P.D. Season 12, Episode 17 opens with Kevin spending some quality time with his new girlfriend, Val, at her house. While the two are enjoying a dinner date at the latter's house, they hear gunshots, and Kevin runs outside to see what has happened.
While Kevin saw a mysterious man running from the scene, he could not catch the suspect because of an old dying man, who became a casualty at the crime scene. Kevin prioritised the old man, who eventually died on the scene.
Val was visibly shocked after the incident because, being a therapist, she was not used to seeing this violence as much as her boyfriend. Kevin calls his team for backup, and the two try to conceal their relationship in the front because they have decided to keep it casual. After initial facial recognition, the cops narrow down to a suspect, Nick Payton.
Chicago P.D. Season 12, Episode 17 recap: Val has a stalker
The suspect's name immediately rang a bell in Val's mind, and she confirmed that Nick was once his patient, who joined therapy to cope with his mother's death. While Nick was deeply troubled, she confirmed that he was not capable of violence. But Kevin maintains that the man he saw on the crime scene was Nick, and he is a suspect in the murder.
In Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 17, on reaching Nick's house, Kevin sees multiple pictures of Val on Nick's wall, confirming that he was stalking his therapist. When Kevin confronts Val about this, she confesses that Nick started developing feelings for her during their sessions, which is very common for patients, something they call 'transference'.
Since their therapist is the kindest person helping them to cope with their grief, it is common to develop feelings for them. Which is why Val transferred him to another doctor. Kevin and his team eventually track Nick down, and even while he maintains that he did not murder the old man, he is put in jail.
Chicago P.D. Season 12, Episode 17 recap: Nick is proved innocent
After Nick's arrest, another armed robbery takes place near Val's house, which confirms that Nick was innocent and it was, in fact, a case of armed robbery. Kevin and his team release Nick and ask him to describe the man he saw that night.
However, Nick refuses to talk before he sees Val, and when Val arrives on the scene, he breaks down, saying he did not want to harm her. He just wanted to see her from afar and protect her. After his emotional confession, he reveals that he saw a man with a limp, who is later recognised as a man named Robert Boyd.
Boyd, a robber, once turned on his team for immunity, but it looks like he is back to his old ways. When Kevin and his team reach Boyd's house, they see all the items stolen from Val's neighbours. The cops also learn that Boyd is aware that Nick snitched on him to the police, and Kevin is concerned that he will go after him.
He learns that Val is currently with Nick, trying again to be his therapist. He tries to warn her about Boyd, but the phone disconnects. Boyd arrives at Nick's house, but Kevin and his team eventually take him down. Kevin and Val make up after her confession.
