Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 18 recap: Voight's secret investigation

Sergeant Voight has never been the kind of cop who sticks to the rulebook but even he has a line, and Deputy Chief Reid has crossed it. Reid is deeply corrupt and uses blackmail to control officers, even promoting those he can manipulate. Voight has figured out that Reid once had a criminal informant in Detroit who vanished after refusing to cooperate.
Now in Chicago, Reid is pulling the same strings — only this time, he’s partnering with a drug dealer named Jesus Otero, who runs a trafficking operation out of his funeral home. Reid actively clears the path for Otero’s empire by getting rival dealers arrested.
While this partnership did reduce violence in the neighborhood, it came at the cost of justice. Voight quietly investigates this off the books, getting outside help from a friend in the State Attorney’s Office to understand Reid’s past patterns.
Everything starts unraveling in the Chicago P.D. episode when a crew of carjackers unknowingly steals a vehicle packed with Otero’s drugs, worth half a million dollars.

Officer Dante Torres' struggle continues in Chicago P.D. Season 12

The case takes an emotional turn when the driver of the stolen drug car is found murdered. Initially, it seems Otero might’ve killed her for losing the product, but it turns out she was shot by the carjacking crew. She chose not to seek help because she feared Otero’s wrath.
This hits close to home for Officer Torres, who has been unraveling mentally. He shows up late to work, hiding an arm injury, and openly disobeys direct orders during a car chase, causing a crash. Voight begins to see that Torres is struggling far more than he’s let on.
As the Chicago P.D. Season 12 episode progresses, Torres admits he hasn’t been sleeping and is haunted by his past mistakes especially getting involved with a criminal informant, which led to Reid blackmailing Voight.
He believes his downfall sparked this entire mess and that guilt is eating away at him. Meanwhile, Reid manipulates Torres by pretending to be supportive, pushing him to risk his life to recover the drugs.
The truth finally comes out in Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 18

Torres finds one of the members of the carjacking crew and reveals everything to Voight, from how confused he is and how nothing including faith, family and work is making him feel like himself again.
Voight intervenes to interrogate the suspect finding out the crew hadn't known the car contained drugs. They had dumped it after stripping it. Voight employs that information to retrieve the car, but his team begins questioning why they're involved in something that's connected to a drug dealer.
Voight eventually confesses in the Chicago P.D. episode that Reid is blackmailing him and has everyone from the unit in his pocket. They go to retrieve the car, but it blows up.
The drugs were no longer necessary because Otero had already restocked, presumably through Reid's connections. Voight confronts Reid only to be reminded that now it's Reid calling the shots.
Despite solving the murder, Voight and his team couldn't escape Reid's control. This might force Voight to follow rules strictly, which is something he never plans to do. But now that things have gotten too far, Sergeant Hank Voight might finally stick to the law in the next Chicago P.D. Season 12 episode.
