The beloved NBC police procedural Chicago P.D. premiered its first episode of Season 12 on September 25.

Fans were excited to follow through the lives of detectives and officers at the fictional Intelligence unit of the 21st District of the Chicago Police Department. They were also curious to know about the fate of Sergeant Hank Voight, the chief of Chicago P.D. Intelligence unit.

The curiosity was further punctuated after the events of season 11 finale where Voight was captured by the serial killer Frank Matson and was almost killed after being subjected to brutal torture.

With the timely assistance of Detective Hailey Upton, Frank was caught. However, the incident scarred Detective Upton and in spite of Voight’s emotional confession during their captive stage regarding his fatherly affection towards her, she decides to take a break from Intelligence to heal and decides to join the FBI.

In a shocking turn of events, the season premiere saw the death of a new character, Detective Emily Martel, leaving fans reeling.

The season premiere, titled "Ten Ninety-Nine," shows the force still trying to process Detective Upton’s untimely departure, which has significantly increased the workload for the rest of the unit.

The episode introduces a new addition to the Intelligence Unit, Detective Emily Martel, who quickly becomes Voight’s close associate. Throughout the episode, Detective Martel’s efficiency and easy rapport with the rest of the unit, especially with Adam Ruzek, made viewers believe she would play an important role after Upton’s departure.

However, by the end of the episode, that expectation is cut short, as she dies almost unceremoniously after getting involved in a seemingly random shootout with Adam.

Detective Martel's death came as a shock to viewers, as she was being developed as a valuable addition to the Intelligence Unit. Played by Victoria Cartagena, Martel is shown as a detective who plays by the rules and is passionate about organization.

When first introduced, she is already a month into the job and is dealing with the overwhelming caseload using her systematic organizational skills. She quickly proves herself as a valuable addition to the unit.

It is soon revealed that she was acquainted with Adam from their Academy days, explaining their instant bond. Throughout the episode, she is shown saving Adam at gunpoint, further establishing her as a crucial asset to both the team and the show.

As the episode progresses, the audience learns more about her personal struggles through a conversation with Adam. She reveals that she was devastated by the death of her previous partner and is still trying to recover. This bit of information serves as eerie foreshadowing, as Detective Martel is shot dead in front of her current partner, Adam.

As noted by media outlets, Detective Martel's death mirrors the death of Detective Julie Willhite in the pilot episode of the show.
