NBC’s Chicago Med has been entertaining the audience for 10 years now. The 10th season of the medical drama, which went on a mid-season break in November 2024, finally returned to the screens on January 8, 2025, with the release of the episode Broken Hearts.

The episode features a mix of intense drama and emotional moments as Sharon Goodwin’s fate is finally revealed. In the mid-season finale, the hospital administrator was attacked by the wife of one of her patients, which left her life hanging in the balance.

At the same time, the episode also resolves a long-standing issue between Dr. Reese and Dr. Charles. Here is the complete Chicago Med season 10 episode 9 recap.

Chicago Med season 10 episode 9 recap: Goodwin’s fate revealed

Chicago Med season 10 episode 9 picks up right where the fall finale left off, with Sharon Goodwin fighting for her life. She is attacked in her office by Cassidy, the wife of a former patient. Cassidy holds her at knifepoint and blames Goodwin for her wife’s death.

She stabs her, but fortunately, Dr. Archer arrives at the scene just in time. He manages to overpower Cassidy and rushes Goodwin to the ED. Goodwin’s condition is critical and she requires immediate surgery.

During the operation, Dr. Archer realizes that a complicated procedure, the Whipple, is necessary to give her a normal life. Despite initial objections from her daughter, Archer proceeds with the surgery without waiting for her consent.

His decision pays off as Goodwin is able to survive. She begins her recovery in the ICU, where she thanks Archer for his quick thinking and decisiveness. She tears his resignation letter apart and asks him to stay at Chicago Med.

Dr. Charles and Dr. Reese mend their relationship

Dr. Charles and Dr. Reese’s dynamic changes significantly in Chicago Med season 10 episode 9. Reese files a misconduct complaint against Charles and accuses him of undermining her treatment of a patient.

The patient, who believes she is taking antidepressants, is actually on placebos prescribed by Reese. Charles reveals this to the patient, which causes a potential crisis when she overdoses. The two then have to work together to resolve the case.

They discover that the patient suffers from episodic memory loss (EML), which is not a psychiatric condition. The collaboration not only helps the patient but also leads to reconciliation between Reese and Charles.

Reese admits that Charles’ criticism of her made her doubt herself, while Charles apologizes for not supporting her enough. While Charles wants Reese to return to the Chicago Medical Center, the latter refuses. In the end, they finally mend their relationship and only have respect for each other.

Dr. Frost steps in to help Dr. Abrams on a challenging case

Amid all the emotional and high-stakes drama, the episode also adds some humor through Dr. Abrams’ interactions with his patient Allie. Allie is a free-spirited young girl who is undergoing her third brain surgery.

She is tired of being teased for her baldness and insists the surgery be performed without shaving her head. Abrams, known for his blunt nature, feels confused about how to handle the case.

Dr. Frost then steps in and offers to shave his own head so that Allie does not feel too awkward. She eventually agrees to go through with the procedure. However, Abrams is able to preserve her hair during surgery with his skills. He even braids her hair afterward.

The humorous and heartfelt plot provides some much-needed comic relief in the episode. At the same time, Abrams’ bond with Allie reveals a softer side of his otherwise rough personality.

Chicago Med season 10 airs new episodes on NBC on Wednesdays.
