Beef was an instant hit on Netflix after the premiere of its debut season. The success of Beef warranted that Netflix renews the popular dark-comedy series for a second season. Now, the latest update regarding the upcoming second installment of the show comes from actress Carey Mulligan, who is a part of Beef season two's cast.
Speaking to Variety magazine at the ongoing Sundance Film Festival, Carey Mulligan revealed that filming for the second season of Beef is ongoing. Mulligan remarked:
"We just started. Almost everything (is different). But it’s still (creator Lee Sung Jin) being brilliant. It’s a completely new story and if I say anything else then a laser beam will appear on my head. But it’s very exciting.”
The debut season of Beef was so successful that it garnered eight Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, four Critics Choice Awards, two Gotham Awards, two SAG Awards, and two Film Independent Spirit Awards.
What happened in season one?
The debut season began when two strangers' lives intersected following a road rage incident. The character of Danny Cho is presented as a failed contractor who has a bone to pick, whereas the character of Amy Lau is a self-made businesswoman with a glamorous existence. Throughout the ten-episode run of the series, their animosity consumes them, intertwining their lives and relationships in more ways than one.
The debut season's premise was inspired by creator Lee Sung Jin's personal road rage incident, which had the other participant involved driving a BMW rather than a white SUV, as Amy does on the show. Speaking on the Beef SXSW panel, Lee Sung Jin had previously revealed:
"It honked at me, cursed at me, and drove away, and for some reason on that day, I was like, ‘I’m going to follow you."
When asked about how he shall respond if the other person ever contacts him in his DM, Lee humorously noted to Tudum:
"I would say, ‘Oh my God, thank you for reaching out.’ And I would laugh, and I’d thank him, truthfully, as George says in the show: ‘Anger is just a transitory state of consciousness.’ It’s such a fleeting emotion. So there would be no anger at all on my side. I am very thankful that experience happened, so it would make me reflect on how all bad moments … you never know what they can lead to.”
What's the latest buzz about Beef season 2?
While the debut season of the Netflix show was presented as a standalone story, the second season consists of quite a few changes. For starters, the episode count has been brought down to eight from ten, and the show will now assume more of an anthology structure. The episodes will be of thirty minutes in duration. The official logline for the second season reads:
"A young couple witnesses an alarming fight between their boss and his wife, triggering chess moves of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner."
The cast for the second season includes Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny alongside Academy Award Winner Yuh-Jung.
Season one is exclusively available on Netflix.
