The plot of Paramount+'s Burden of Guilt tells the story of Tracyraquel Berns' fight for justice for her baby brother Mathew. Four-months-old Mathew died under tragic circumstances around 25 years ago when Berns' was just two years old.

What turned out to be the most disturbing case in American history, Berns grew up believing that her brother died because of an accident. She was intrigued to know more about it when she realized her family had not discussed the event with her. This made her curious when medical reports revealed that she was responsible for Mathew's death.

Tracyraquel Bern was just a young toddler during her brother's death. How could she kill someone? More importantly, her mother and grandmother reported that it was Berns who killed her brother by throwing him off the crib.

In the trailer, Tracyraquel Berns described her parents as,

"They weren't parents to me they were monsters."

Tracyraquel Berns began investigating her brother's death, and her quest for justice led to unraveling terrible truths about her family. This included her facing past trauma, including her mother attempting suicide in front of her.

The podcast turned crime series will delve into how Berns opened up the cold case. The investigation led the authorities of Dekalb County, Georgia, to exhume baby Mathew's body twenty-five years after his death, which showed it was a homicide.

Over the three episodes, Bern will explain her journey to justice with the help of a forensic team and prosecutors. It was not an easy journey for Tracyraquel as she faced numerous health conditions, too, including trauma issues, lupus, and COVID.
