The Buffy Reboot with Chloé Zhao's involvement was revealed to be in the works in February 2025. Now, almost a month later, TVLine has exclusively reported new details of the reboot. However, it should be noted that it will be a while before there is an official confirmation of these rumored details. But, for now, it is known that Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning in this revival.
However, it is unknown which of the original cast members will be returning for the revival. Siblings Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, the showrunners of Peacock's Poker Face, are attached to the Buffy reboot to serve as its writers, executive producers, and showrunners. Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao is set to be an executive producer and direct the reboot.
Furthermore, the executive producers of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gail Berman, Kaz and Fran Kuzui, will be serving as additional EPs in the reboot along with Dolly Parton. In addition to starring, Gellar will also be credited as an additional executive producer.
While she reprises her role as the titular Buffy, the TVLine report suggests that Geller will have a guest role, and the reboot will focus on new characters.
Who will be the new characters in the Buffy reboot?
The TVLine report revealed three characters of the Buffy reboot namely Nova, Gracie, and Hugo. Nova is a 16-year-old girl described as a smart loner. She has two friends: Gracie, Buffy's acolyte and a vampire expert, and Hugo, a nerd from a wealthy family who also identifies as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The casting process for the main trio is still underway, but there were no comments from the studio representatives. So, it should be noted that the character details are open to change.
The closest official confirmation that we got was Sarah Michelle Gellar's March 15, 2025, interview with People Magazine. In that interview, the actress expressed surprise at the speed at which the Buffy reboot was progressing by saying:
"We've set up our offices, which means things are progressing probably faster than I'd anticipated."
What will the Buffy reboot be about?
For now, not much is known about the reboot. We know that the show will supposedly take place 20 years after the conclusion of the original series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This time, Buffy may take up the mentoring role of her Watcher, Rupert Giles, played by actor Anthony Stewart Head in the original series. Whatever the plot may be, this revival has fans excited for the return of one of the most iconic women-led series.
The inclusion of Sarah Michelle Gellar has fans hopeful that the reboot will be as good as the original series. That's because the actress was opposed to returning to a reboot/revival. That was the case until Gellar confirmed the Buffy reboot three days after Deadline broke the news of a revival on February 3, 2025. The actress posted this with the caption:
"So….. you might have heard some news this week, but I realize you haven’t heard from me. Three years ago, I got a call from my dear friend and mentor, Gail Berman. She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential “Buffy” revival. I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again. We’d always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice. I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us."
The actress continued,
"While I didn’t agree to anything at that meeting, I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conversation. These conversations did, in fact, continue over the next few years and eventually we added the incredible Nora and Lilla Zuckerman to our little tribe until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea. I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit “Buffy” and her world, but it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there. I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love “Buffy” as much as I do. And as much as you do. Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you."
