Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a comfort show and lowkey one of the most wholesome workplace comedies we’ve ever seen. It gave us some of the funniest and most lovable characters ever written.
Jake Peralta was the goofball detective with a Die Hard obsession and a talent for turning the precinct into a playground. Then there was Rosa Diaz, who was intimidating but secretly soft-hearted. And don’t even get us started on Charles Boyle. He was definitely the human golden retriever.
But at the heart of all this madness was Captain Raymond Holt: Stoic, stiff, serious... and absolutely hilarious. No one expected him to become one of the show’s funniest characters when he first walked in.
But that’s exactly what happened. He became one of the best TV bosses ever. He was a man who protected his squad. And who can even forget his hilarious one-liners?

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Captain Holt was the heart of the team
We’d argue that Captain Holt was one of the funniest and most wholesome characters on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. What made him such a joy to watch was the way he could deliver the most ridiculous lines with zero emotion. We can never forget how he said:
"I've never been happier."
He said it with a face so blank that it made it funnier than if he’d been cracking up while saying it.
But Holt was more than just the king of deadpan humor. He was a real leader who genuinely respected his team and stood by them through thick and thin. He always led with empathy and fairness and lifted up his team when they needed it most.
One standout moment was when Rosa came out as bis*xual. Holt had his own journey as a gay Black police officer. So he offered her some encouragement:
“You should be very proud of yourself. I know things aren't exactly the way you want them to be right now.”
Just exactly what she needed to hear.
He understood people deeply. Maybe sometimes more than they realized. Like when Rosa was visibly anxious before breaking up with Holt's nephew. Holt calmly pointed it out before she’d even said a word. That’s who he was - observant and emotionally intelligent. Also, he wasn't even angry at her for breaking up with his nephew. In fact, he helped her with it.
Holt had his fun side, too, in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He was always in for Halloween Heists. Holt would roll his eyes and still let Jake play dress-up. Like that time he allowed Jake and Boyle five minutes to pretend to be undercover agents even though the suspects had already surrendered.
He also lent money to Adrian Pimento who was a former detective. It just goes to show how big-hearted Holt really was in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Captain Holt was a good mentor
Holt sure got fired up when it came to winning for a man who barely raises an eyebrow. Especially when Jake Peralta was involved. Remember the time he showed up to work with a cast, and everyone was shocked?
Turns out, he injured himself while hula-hooping. He told Jake the truth and showed him all the hilarious photos of him mid-hoop. Then deleted them leaving Jake with zero proof. He then told him nobody is going to believe him even if he spills it out to someone.
That’s the dynamic Jake and Holt always had in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. They were constantly butting heads. But they were also full of admiration and even love. Jake saw Holt as a father figure. He even called him so in one of the scenes of the show.
Holt looked out for the entire squad in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He knew Amy Santiago idolized him to the point where she wouldn’t disagree with anything he said. Even when she should have. So, he deliberately got under her skin to push her to stand up for herself.
That's not someone who demands obedience. But someone who teaches you how to have your own voice.
Captain Raymond Holt wasn’t loud. He wasn’t always cracking jokes and certainly didn’t play by the usual funny boss rules. But that’s exactly what made him so unforgettable.
He was hilarious in his own dry-as-sandpaper way in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
