Top 5 cold opens from Brooklyn 99, ranked
5) When Amy was a few minutes late (Brooklyn 99 Season 2 Episode 6)
Although a simple but humorous cold opening from Season 2, it was also another classic squad moment that showed their playfulness. When Amy is 70 seconds late for work, Jake gathers around everybody to chip in with their theories on why this happened.
If you know Amy, you know this is unusual for her as she is extra punctual on work every day. Even Captain Holt gives his two cents, saying there would be a problem at the bank. While Terry thinks her alarm would be off, Gina thinks she has fallen into another dimension (classic Gina).
When Amy did arrive 70 seconds late, Jake teases her about the same and she finally reveals there was a problem at the bank, with Holt giving us another 'Hot Damn! moment.
4) When Charles had a dream about Jake ( Brooklyn 99 Season 5 Episode 1)
Did you think Jake-Amy were relationship goals in Brooklyn 99? Think again, because it was Charles and Jake all along. This hilarious cold open from Season 5 proves this, as Charles has a dream about Jake when he and Rosa are wrongfully sent to prison.
From Charles eating a butter stick like a popsicle to Scully casually bleeding through his stomach, everything was comedy genius here. Charles dreams about Jake's return, and Holt even sends the duo on a vacation to Disney Land. He wakes up confused when Terry and Amy jolt him out of his daydreams, and we learn that this was not the first Jake dream he has had lately. Classic Boyle!
3) When Hitchcock and Scully ruined the day ( Brooklyn 99 Season 3 Episode 19)
Another hilarious cold open in which almost everyone from the squad was involved is from Season 3, when Captain Holt returned very pleased from his Paris trip with Kevin. Jake called it Holt's Vacation High and saw it as an opportunity to make him say yes to anything.
But while the squad is discussing their fancy and weird demands on what they should ask, Jake sees Scully and Hitchcock return from Holt's office, and just like that, his day is ruined.
They first welcomed him back and then mentioned how he had gained weight in Paris, which could ruin anybody's mood. Holt gets out of his office, furious, and asks why nobody is working, as Jake regrets an opportunity that has slipped away.
2) When Charles grew a goatee ( Brooklyn 99 Season 2 Episode 18)
Since Charles is always doing some hilarious antics, the time he grew a goatee was hilarious. He even named it Biana, in memory of his first cousin, who was thick and hairy like his goatee. First, he takes everybody to notice it, while the whole squad pretends it is not there, then Gina aptly describes it as
''It looks like you unclogged a shower drain with your mouth''
Captain Holt pretends to appreciate it, asking Charles to come closer so that he can have a closer look at Bianca. Right then, Terry deadlocks Charles, while Jake trims Charles' goatee away, giving a humorous cold open.
1) When Holt planned the perfect punishment for Jake ( Brooklyn 99 Season 6 Episode 13)
Captain Holt and Jake Perkata might be poles apart, but they work great as a team because they know each other very well. Another moment where their relationship is on perfect display is this cold open from Brooklyn 99 Season 6, where Holt plans the perfect punishment for Jake.
Since Jake is always late in the morning for the roll-call meeting, Holt prepares a signature handshake with everybody on the team, except Jake. Everyone who knows the goofy detective knows how much he enjoys these silly handshakes, and it would have hit him hard knowing everybody has a signature handshake with the Captain, except him.
He calls every minute of it 'hell', until Holt pulls out the big gun and reveals that he even has a handshake with the copy guy, a classic humorous moment.
