Blue Bloods spin-off Boston Blue just confirmed its release window (& it’s sooner than expected)

Boston Blue is the highly anticipated spin-off of Blue Bloods, focused on Danny Reagan as he moves from his familial home in New York City to Boston. Ever since it was announced that Blue Bloods was ending with its 14th season, fans have been demanding that the story continue.

The demands were finally met when CBS announced a spin-off revolving around Danny. Donnie Wahlberg, who plays the lead role in the new show, has now confirmed its release window. With an Instagram post, the actor announced that Boston Blue will premiere on CBS in the fall of this year.

Considering the project was recently greenlit, fans expected the show to premiere by early 2026. However, CBS has made it part of the network’s fall schedule, which means work on the series is going on in full swing.

Boston Blue to premiere on CBS in Fall 2025

Donnie Wahlberg took to Instagram on March 25, 2025, to post a video teasing Boston Blue. The footage shows Danny Reagan’s snippets from Blue Bloods and announces the spin-off’s release window as Fall 2025. Donnie captioned the post:

“So excited to carry on the tradition, to share so many surprises, to answer some unanswered questions, and to welcome all of you — to #BostonBlue! The next chapter in the #BlueBloods legacy begins. I can’t wait. See you CBS fall!”

CBS is going to announce its fall roster on May 7, hence, the exact release date of Boston Blue could be revealed then. The new show is a continuation of Blue Bloods and follows Danny Reagan as he leaves New York City to join the Boston Police Department. He teams up with Detective Lena Peters to take down criminals in the city.

Lena is from a prominent law enforcement family, just like Danny, so their collaboration is something to watch out for. Meanwhile, the makers have not confirmed if any other cast members from the original show will appear in the spin-off. The official synopsis for the new series reads:

“In Boston Blue, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama Boston Blue, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”

Donnie Wahlberg starred as NYPD Detective Danny Reagan in all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods. He is the eldest child of Police Commissioner Frank Reagan and is known for his hotheaded nature and old-school approach to police work. During the show, he has to deal with the loss of his wife, Linda.

In the series finale, he gives another chance at love by asking out Detective Maria Baez, played by Marisa Ramirez. However, with his move to Boston, it remains to be seen how his relationship with Baez pans out.

Blue Bloods aired on CBS from 2010 to 2024. The show also starred Tom Selleck, Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou, Will Estes, Amy Carlson, Jennifer Esposito, Sami Gayle, Marisa Ramirez, and Vanessa Ray.
