Blade Runner 2099 is all set to be the latest addition in the Blade Runner franchise. The events of the upcoming Prime Video show take place 50 years after Blade Runner 2049, the last-released film of the franchise that opened in 2017. Although Blade Runner 2099 was officially announced in 2022, production of the show was significantly delayed due to the WAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood.
As of now, Prime Video is yet to declare a release date for Blade Runner 2099. Similarly, neither the plot details nor the number of episodes have been revealed for the upcoming show. Despite this, good news seems around the corner for fans, as it has been reported that Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer have been roped in to join an already remarkable ensemble cast.
Although Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 proved to be underwhelming at the box office, the Blade Runner IP made its foray into the animated world with Blade Runner: Black Lotus in 2021. This was followed up by a comic book adaptation from Titan Comics. Now, as fans gear up for a live-action sequel to the original film franchise, here is everything we know about the upcoming show.
Is there a release date for Blade Runner 2099?
Unfortunately, there isn't a release date yet, for the sequel. It is a known fact that Blade Runner 2049 was a sequel that hit theatres almost 35 years after the release of the original Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott. Nevertheless, we can hope that viewers would have to wait a lot less for the sequel show, first confirmed in September, 2022 by Prime Video. It is a joint production between Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions and Amazon.
Speaking at a press conference announcing the sequel, Vernon Sanders, head of global television for Amazon, stated:
"The original ‘Blade Runner,’ directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce ‘Blade Runner 2099’ to our global Prime Video customers. We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the ‘Blade Runner’ franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, ‘Blade Runner 2099’ will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”
As per a report by Deadline, filming of the show resumed in May 2024 at Prague, Czech Republic, after the Hollywood strikes. It can be speculated that owing to the extensive post-production required, the show might hit the screens sometime in the latter half of 2025.

Blade Runner 2099: Plot details speculated
It is a known fact that Blade Runner 2049 ended on a definite note that didn't leave room for further speculation.
