Of late, Black Mirror has been one of the most influential science fiction television shows. This has been the case since its 2011 premiere. The anthology format, developed by Charlie Brooker, enables each episode to stand alone. This is done while sharing a common theme: the effects of technology on contemporary society.

The show began gaining international recognition for its unsettling reflection on social media. In 2025, Season 7 premiered on April 11. The first episode of the seventh season, "Common People," continued this tradition.

This was mainly done by discussing the medical technology industry and the commodification of consciousness in society. The first episode introduced viewers to Amanda, a teacher whose husband, Mike, signs a contract with Rivermind, a digital consciousness preservation platform, as a result of her medical emergency.

Charlie Brooker's British science fiction anthology series Black Mirror is renowned for its gloomy, satirical depiction of the interaction between people and technology. The series debuted on Channel 4 in 2011.

This show was later moved to Netflix in 2016 for streaming purposes. Season 6 debuted in June 2023. In contrast to the series' usual tech-centric focus, supernatural horror was added into the franchise in its last episode, "Demon 79." The plot, which was set in 1979, follows Nida, a shoe store employee who was tricked by a demon into killing people to stop the end of the world.

On April 10, 2025, Netflix released Season 7 of Black Mirror, opening with "Common people" as its first episode, which marked a return to the classic Black Mirror theme: a terrifying indictment of techno-capitalism. The plot revolves around Amanda (played by Rashida Jones), a good-hearted educator who passes out in the middle of class because of a brain tumor.

Desperate to stay in touch with her, her husband, Mike (played by Chris O'Dowd), is approached by Rivermind, a digital awareness service that simulates post-life interaction. Episode 1 primarily examines how digital companies may capitalize on love and bereavement and run entire businesses using human vulnerability as a means to earn profit.

At first, Mike is given limited access to Amanda's digital awareness as part of a "free trial." What initially began as a genuine attempt to maintain communication devolved into a horrifying spiral of financial abuse, emotional manipulation, and corporate overreach.

As the episode ends on a morally disturbing note, Mike is seen alone, unable to afford Amanda's full presence, and made to listen to a sterile, pre-programmed avatar repeating catchphrases. The narrative highlights a grim reality: in a world driven by capitalism, even grieving becomes a commodity with use and exchange values.

Cast of Black Mirror Season 7

With each season showcasing a blend of well-known celebrities and new talent with fresh faces, Black Mirror has consistently attracted a diverse cast to its anthology format.

Rashida Jone, who co-wrote Season 3's "Nosedive," has thus returned to the Black Mirror universe as an actor, playing the role of Amanda. Jones. Jones anchors the episode's emotional stakes by expressing both warmth and grief despite his brief on-screen presence.
