If you're a fan of Money Heist, you're in for a treat with Netflix's Berlin. This show is a backstory that takes you to the early days of the main character, Berlin. It's got all the heist action you love, but loots the feels too.
In the first season, we see Berlin in his prime, juggling a wild love life while trying to pull off a massive job. It gets even more complicated when hearts get broken, and people start turning on each other.
As Season 2 starts filming, let us catch you up on Season 1.
Berlin’s team and the 44 million Euro heist
The show is about Berlin putting together a top-notch team to pull off a massive heist in Paris, aiming for 34 priceless jewels—we're talking 44 million euros worth of bling here! These aren't just any old rocks; they're historic pieces crafted to perfection. Security is a puzzle, and emotions keep the team on their toes.
So, who's on the team? Keila, the tech whiz, will crack the auction house's security. Then there's Bruce, who can do a bit of everything—the kind of person you want on your side when you're breaking in. Damien's the brainy one from the university, the guy who's got the strategy down to a T. Roi's our lock-picking maestro with a past that's seen better days. Cameron is a fresh face.
Berlin, the mastermind, is the one who keeps everyone together. He plans to sneak into a swanky auction house through the Paris catacombs. But, as if that wasn't complicated enough, he's smitten with Camille, who happens to be married to the director at the auction house. Talk about mixing business with pleasure!
Tangled love stories were the core of Berlin
Season 1 shows how love and relationships mess with the characters' heads. You've got Berlin going all out to win over Camille, who he randomly starts watching, and it turns into an obsession. Their love affair causes drama, especially with Damien who's dealing with his marriage falling apart.
Then there's Keila and Bruce, who hit it off despite being complete opposites—she's all about keeping it real and he's as flashy as they come. And let's not forget about Roi and Cameron, who start catching feelings for each other even though they've got their baggage.
All these lovey-dovey situations start to mess with the big heist they're planning. The lead's got his head in the clouds thinking about Camille and it's making him sloppy. Meanwhile, Damien's all fired up because of what Berlin's doing, and they have a huge fight right when they need to be focused.
These love stories throw a wrench in their plans, and it's a big part of the show's vibe—how love and success can get complicated.
The heist’s climax and its aftermath
The team pulls off the heist and gets the jewels, but their getaway hits some snags. Bruce and Keila almost get busted when their traveler disguises come close to being seen through at a crowded bus station. Meanwhile, Roi and Cameron are in a nail-biting chase underground, dodging cops left and right.
But the real twist comes when the lead tries to pin everything on Camille's husband, Francois Polignac, by planting evidence. It seems like a clever move, but hits Camille hard when she finds out what he did. She decides to use this to her advantage, though. Once the dust settles, it's clear that the team's friendship isn't as strong as it used to be.
Keila and Bruce are torn between right and wrong, Cameron's dealing with issues from their past, and the lead has a mess on his hands because of his feelings for Camille. They barely make it out of there, and Berlin and Damien end up in Spain to hide and think about what's next for their band of thieves.
Camille’s decision matters
Camille finds out that Francois has been cheating on her, right? And instead of just going to the cops about it, she decides she wants a piece of the money he's been hiding. This shows how ruthless yet flexible she can be, and it fits with the kind of not-always-good-but-not-always-bad vibe of the show.
With Camille and Berlin still playing their games together, their relationship is going to be rather important in the next season.
